PRO STOCK "Unbelievable!" Johnson exclaimed. "At about 1,000 feet I could see the shadow of Jeg's front end and it looked like his car was ahead of mine. A split second later the win light came on in my lane and I said, 'Damn, I won the race!'" Five Camaros qualified in the Pro Stock field. Kurt Johnson was Number 4 qualifier with a 6.896/199.85. "We changed the suspension pre-load and adjusted the rear torsion bar to make the car run straight," Kurt explained about the qualifying run, "and my ACDelco Camaro responded with a perfectly straight run. We had a little tire shake at the top of first gear, but otherwise it was a smooth ride. The biggest problem was that the transmission popped out of second gear for nine-hundredths of a second before it engaged third gear. That was quite a shock, but the car had enough momentum that it only cost me a hundredth or two - but that might have been enough for the pole. I figured a 6.94 wouldn't be good enough to get in the show, and with a 6.91 bump, obviously it wasn't. I was breathing a little easier after that 6.89. It's a tough situation when you have to make a perfect run in every session just to stay in the show." The victory was Kurt's second NHRA Finals title and his 21st national event victory. Kurt went into the final round match with Coughlin as the underdog. Coughlin had turned quicker elapsed times and put Kurt in the unfavored right lane. Johnson upset Coughlin with a 6.854-second e.t., the quickest Pro Stock run of the event. Nickens Takes Out Krisher "That was pretty cool," Nickens said of his 6.910/199.37 pass. "I put a nice light on Krisher and we took the race. That was a great way to close out the season." |
