PRO STOCK TRUCK
Somebody Up There Likes Stanfield
Greg
Stanfield collected the first Pro Stock Truck title of his career, defeating
Mike Coughlin in the final round with a 7.520/179.95 pass to Coughlin's
7.569/179.18. Although Coughlin had a near-perfect reaction time of
.404, Stanfield had lane choice, which made the difference at the finish.
The final round was really special said Stanfield, "because I didn't
have a line lock (which locks the front brakes only in order to accomplish
a burn-out) when I went into the water. To pull that off definitely
means the Man Upstairs was on my side.
"I started driving in 1980. To get to this level in 20 years is definitely
special. I wanted to run Pro Stock, but I never thought I would be in
an S-10 truck. It's definitely been fun."
Stanfield's BDP Enterprises entry took him to fifth place in the Winston
Championship points. Asked about his achievement, Stanfield replied,
"There's a lot of hard work that goes into being out here. It takes
a lot of money, a lot of effort, a lot of sweat, a lot of tears. Bart
and Donna Price backed me in this deal. Without them I wouldn't be here.
My guys have worked so hard to get here, so it's definitely gratifying
to pull off a win here."
Johns Credits Horst-Power
Steve Johns, driver of the Castrol Super Clean Chevy S-10 which was
the number 1 qualifier, credited his success at the Pomona track with
having tune-up consultant Kevin Horst.
"With Kevin on board from Indy on, everything is different. He knows
what's going on. It makes it real nice. We've also done a lot of work
at (Bill 'Grumpy') Jenkins' shop. Before that we were getting our butts
kicked religiously. We continued to work hard. I've also had to drive
as well as I could to give Horst data to work with. And, it seems like
I have good luck here."
CHEVY NUMBERS
Chevrolet had a great time at Pomona. Six Camaro Z28 Funny Cars qualified
for the field, the most that have ever attempted to qualify for an event
so far and Chevy S-10s claimed the top 10 positions in the Pro Stock
Truck class.
