If you've been around drag racing for a while, you've
probably heard the legendary names of Art Chrisman, Kenny Safford, Ted
Cyr, Kent Fuller, Larry Sutton, Chuck Griffith, George Bolthoff, C.J.
Hart, Pat Foster, Dale Pulde, Gene Winfield, Bob Muravez, Hubert Platt,
Jess Tyree, the Frantic 4, the Jade Grenade, the Sour Sisters, Greer
Black and Prudhomme, and Don Garlits. All are part of drag racing's
rich history of innovation, performance, competition, and colorful characters.
This
year's California Hot Rod Reunion, at Bakersfield's Famoso Raceway was
the tenth anniversary of a three-day party to celebrate the cars, the
drivers, the crews, the innovators, and the fans of drag racing's golden
days before things changed in the early 1970's. Drag racing owes its
success today not only to corporate America and successful businessmen;
it owes a large debt to the people honored at each year's reunion.
The CHRR consists of Vintage Drag Racing with Top Fuel,
A/Fuel, Junior Fuel, and a variety of exhibition entries, a great car
show, nostalgia and performance equipment booths, a swap meet, a track
cruise, and the much anticipated Saturday evening Cacklefest.
