PRICE PACES NITRO HARLEYS

At the other end of the age spectrum, 65-year-old Ray Price set low E.T. and top speed in qualifying for the Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley division, with a track record 6.374 secs at 219.04 mph.

Ray Price, who is celebrating his 65th Birthday Tour all year with the IHRA, ran a personal best ET at Richmond.

Second-place qualifier Johnny Mancuso, who went 6.472 just two passes before Price, said, "You think you lay down a great pass that nobody can touch and then someone just does something unbelievable like that. But that's drag racing!"

Mancuso's teammate, Steve Stordeur, was third with a 6.502 and defending class champ Doug Vancil was fourth at 6.579 seconds. Mark Conner, Mark Cox, Mike Romine, and Jay Turner also qualified for the eight-bike field.

Veteran Top Fuel Harley rider Bill Furr recorded a disappointing DNQ in Virginia after suffering the same fate at the IHRA season opener in Rockingham, NC. "Bill's having a tough time right now, but that's only because he's trying a lot of new stuff," 1998 Nitro Harley champ Johnny Mancuso explained. "He's trying things now that we'll all be doing eventually. Once he gets this figured out, watch out, because he'll be way ahead of the rest of us."
