Last year's Nitro Harley champion Doug Vancil
leaves hard on his Vance&Hines-sponsored ride on his way to a fourth-place
qualifying position at 6.579 secs and 203.95 mph. |
HAHN REGAINS UPPER HAND
After a frustrating DNQ in Rockingham, Fred Hahn rebounded
with a number-one Pro Mod qualifying effort at Richmond, going 6.259
secs at 221.52 mph in his Summit Racing 2001 Corvette on Saturday afternoon.
Car owner Jim Oddy opted out of the final qualifying session that night
since raceday conditions would be so different and he rightly figured
no one would better Hahn's mark.
Mike Janis, the 2001 Pro Mod champion, came closest with
a 6.278 and set top speed of qualifying at 226.39 mph in his 1963 Vette.
Third on the ladder went to Bob Rieger, who said he was gunning for
the top spot on Saturday night, but a small piece of debris got caught
in the throttle blade during his burnout and the engine in his 1957
Chevy wouldn't slow down from about 4,000 rpm, so he had to abort the
attempt. Thomas Patterson was fourth, followed by Harold Martin, driving
the first of the non-supercharged entries.
GRAVEDIGGER BURIED IN FIELD
Despite having 100 pounds added after dominating in Rockingham,
blower cars still secured 10 of the 16 Pro Mod qualifying positions
in Virginia, including the first four. Unfortunately for Alan Pittman
in the GraveDigger 1941 Willys, his car was not one of them. Pittman
wound up 21st of 38 entries with a best qualifying effort of 6.396 seconds
at 217.70 mph.
