The DNQ setback was particularly disappointing for Pittman's crewmembers, who had hoped for a good outing at Richmond after qualifying 10th at The Rock, only to have a dead battery rob their chances at a win in round one of eliminations.

Team owner Ken Westbrook said a lack of testing time may have hurt the team's early performance, especially since they have been testing some new fuel systems and clutch combinations. "I think the weight and gear rule changes have hit us some too," Westbrook continued. "Rule changes during the course of the season are always tough to deal with. But, we're drag racers and we'll adjust and rebound."

Sully, IA's Dale "The Rail" Brand put his Co-Line 2001 Firebird on top of the 16-car Funny Car field with a 5.828-secs blast at 237.71 mph. Close behind Brand was current points leader Jimmy Rector and defending class champ Mark Thomas. Terry Munroe and Bunny Burkett, who went fastest in qualifying at 239.06 mph, rounded out the top five.

Carl Baker led the way in Pro Stock qualifying with a 6.604 at 210.18 mph in his Summit Racing 2002 Cougar. Second was Chris Holbrook, followed by John Montecalvo, Tim Nabors, and Brian Gahm. The entire P/S field was covered by just .067 seconds, with Doug Kirk grabbing the 16th spot with a 6.671 at 209.36 mph.
