Al Billes, the Pro Mod race winner at Rockingham,
squeaked into the 16th and final qualifying position at VMP with
a 6.347-second pass at 221.67 mph. The Barrie, ON-based driver said
his 1953 Studebaker was just as fast as it's ever been, but his
60-foot times were off by about a hundredth, which obviously cost
him in ET. Kasey Janzen, from Niagara Falls, ON, also tried to make
the Pro Mod field, but fell short with a 6.477 at 217.98 mph. |

After missing qualifying for the Rockingham
Pro Stock field by just five-thousandths, Larry O'Brien fell short
of the 16-car cut in Virginia by just three-thousandths of a second.
Still, the Ottersville, ON-based racer remained upbeat about the
future with his 814 c.i. Jon Kaase-tuned, hemi-powered 1998 Avenger.
"We put a new clutch in for the fourth [qualifying] pass and the
car came back to life," O'Brien said after posting a 6.674 at 207.78
mph. "This is a new engine combination for us this year and we're
learning what it likes and doesn't like. We feel like we're back
on track." |
