TUCSON "TIRES OUT" THE COMPETITION
You
remember the tire-chunking problems at Englishtown and Joliet last summer?
You know. Super conditions, excellent track surface, and the rear slicks
start pulling the tread off the carcass of the tire, or at the very
least, spitting out chunklets at roughly mid-track. This situation cropped
up again at Southwestern International Raceway at Tucson, Arizona during
the NHRA 2001 Spring Training Sessions. According to on-site observers,
rear slicks coughed up chunks of rubber causing the overwhelming majority
of the race teams to limit themselves to 1,000-foot laps. This went
on for the entire weekend.
TRACTION NOT SERVED BEST COLD
Related to the above was a report from Pro Modified standout and former
ADRA Pro Stock World Champ Randy Hagerty. The San Diego, Calif. pro
had his Corvette out for some laps, but the track temperature gauge
made him back off a tad. On Saturday, he got a reading of 58 degrees
(compare that to what happened at last year's Mopar bash at Englishtown,
N.J.) and held himself to one pass, a 6.6-second effort.
Scotty Cannon is hoping new crew chief
Wes Cerny (left) can make the difference this year and get the
team into the winner's circle. The team was troubled by tire
shake all weekend at Tucson. On Sunday the engine dropped a
cylinder on the right side and the car drifted to the left,
kissing the wall near half-track.
