As is usual with this event, the NMRA Jet-Hot
Ford Drag Racing portion of the program saw
a huge field of the top players in Ford Drag
Racing. There were over 160 heads-up cars and
another 100 machines in the bracket pits, making
Atco's pits a packed place to be. The top class,
ProCharger Pro 5.0, had five cars shooting for
the top prize, led by points leader Don Walsh
Jr. Joining Walsh were Ross Stomp, Jeff Allebach,
Doug Mangrum, and Jimmy Briante, but it was
Walsh that stole the show. His 211 mph pass
in qualifying set the mph record for the class,
and he went on to victory, defeating Stomp in
the final round by running yet another 211 mph,
this time with an E.T. of 6.804. With this weekend's
performance, it appears that Walsh has locked
up the 2003 ProCharger Pro 5.0 championship.
John Uris
MSD Super Street Outlaw once again showed why it's the most exciting class in heads-up racing, as 17 small-tires cars qualified. Todd Fluman was the fastest on Saturday with a 7.85 at 178 mph, but on Sunday one of the biggest surprises was the performance of Mike "Punk" Trimandilis, who set the mph record at just over 181 mph. Trimandilis went to the semifinals where he fell to John Urist. Urist locked up the championship this weekend, and then went on to win the event with bracket racer-like consistency. His slowest pass of the weekend was an 8.17 in the first round, and the quickest was a 7.89 that sent Trimandilis to the trailer.
Kenny Compton helped his points record with a number one qualifying position and a win in Edelbrock Hot Street. The spread between the top five qualifiers was less than a tenth of a second in this incredibly competitive class, and Compton was the quickest of the bunch. In the final, he won with a 9.193 at 146 mph to beat Shane Long to the stripe.
ProCharger EFI Renegade had a fantastic field
of 20 cars, all of them packing power-adders
and near-8-second potential. Kurt Gallant had
his nitrous tuned to perfection and topped the
qualifying order, then went on to the final
round to face off with Jeremy Martorella's blower
car. It was a close one, but Gallant got there
first and took the win with a very fast 8.902
at 151 mph.
