September 21 arrived with beautiful warm weather
and bad attitudes. Challenging glares from each
team began the day. The first pair out on the
track, representing the north, was Dan "Da Pimp"
Parker, owner of Parker Chassis based out of
North Carolina, running a 707 nitrous injected
Musi big block, and southerner small-block big-man
Milt Decker. The pair staged, Parker took Decker
off the line and lost traction before the 60-ft.
mark. Decker's 63' Split window roared to the
top end, running a 4.964/151.82 to Parker's
6.110/119.88.
Tutterow and Christian faced off next. Christian
took Tutterow off the line, yet Tutterow's blown
Oldsmobile blew past him down track running
a 4.553/143.79 and taking the win light. Christian's
707 nitrous injected Musi power plant overpowered
the track, shaking, while running a 4.715/151.69.
The next pair to do battle was Dantoni and
Gardner. Each did their burn out and prepared
to stage. Gardner revved the engine and fell
prey to a carburetor malfunction. Flames appeared
in the scoop and he shut it off. Dantoni staged
and made a single pass, running a 4.554/165.28.
Gentile and Floyd were next. Gentile took Floyd
off the line with a .496 RT to a .520 RT. Floyd's
self-built 540 cu. in. blower screamed out a
4.565/162.74. The pass was impressive, yet no
match for Gentile's 4.527/161.81.
Cline and Teachman followed. The pair staged,
launched to a close .468 RT to a .473 RT. Yet,
Teachman's Musi-built nitrous injected 707 cu.
in. overpowered the track, shook and scooted
out of the groove. Teachman laid down a 7.408/75.63,
no match for Cline's 4.556/156.63.
Mike Bell nitrous Oldsmobil
burnout
Bell and Meadows battled next. Bell scorched
Meadows off the line with a .516 RT to a .817
RT. Meadows' 747 naturally aspirated big block
pelted out a 4.708/151.89. Yet, it wasn't enough
to take down Bell's 4.514/154.32.
Moore and Allen shot down the track next and
once again the south nailed the north off the
line. Moore dropped a .463 RT to Allen's .805
RT. Allen's 632 cu. in. power-glide sailed down
the track to a 4.561/163.78. Yet, Moore's '00
Haas built Trans Am took the win light with
a 4.584/162.22. It was a big upset for the north.
The finale of the first round set Musi against
Raynor. "Batman" Raynor took Musi off the line
with a .450 RT to Musi's .495 RT. Raynor, Express
Pick-up and Delivery Service owner based out
of Greensboro, NC piloted his 81' nitrous injected
Camaro to a flying 4.581/161.49. However, Musi
took the win light with a 4.504/163.90.
Dantoni pit
The second round came about in a flash. Sparing
first were Dantoni and Moore. Moore launched
hard with a .469 RT, yet his 706' Fulton powered
Pontiac blew off the tires around half-track
slowing to a 5.176/106.52. Dantoni took the
win light with a 4.433/167.31.
Battling next were Bell and Musi. Musi's own
648' cu. in. two-stage nitrous injected big
block roared down the eighth to a 4.499/165.50.
Bell skidded by, out-running Musi with a 4.498/160.37.
Musi later admitted that his power plant simply
overpowered the track.
