'SUPER' RACERS RESPOND TO 'DEAD-ON'

WHO IS LISTENING TO THE RACERS?

Jok, Dead-on is right. I considered running a few divisionals in a Super? class. Not now. Why didn't the sanctioning bodies poll the drivers? What went on to provoke this rule change? Luckily we have some good facilities close so I can still race and enjoy it. I'll just take my brand spanking new and obsolete Mega 450 and do a little bracket racing. No, make that a lot of bracket racing.

Thanks for stating what needs aired out. Sanctioning bodies are you listening?

HOW FAR WILL IT GO?

Great article about the new wiring rules from NHRA for the Super Categories. I have been a "Super Racer" since its inception. In fact I was runner up at the premiere of "Pro Gas" at the Winter Nationals many years ago. I watched the classes grow from the start.

I resisted the change to all of the electronics for quite awhile. I finally jumped in with both feet when I bought a new dragster for my 50th birthday a few years ago. Purchased a Mega 400 and all. I thought it was a real nice piece, everything you needed in one box.

Anyway, with all of the whining about "cheating" and so on, I'm just about ready to go with the no electronics idea. Every time I turn around there seems to be a new gadget that is needed to be competitive.

Now comes the big one. Have you seen what the new digital, programmable ignition from MSD can do? Per MSD it can be programmed so the engine only accelerates at a certain amount of RPM per second! This is a great traction control for the Pro's. And an even better throttle control for the Super Categories!

Have you had any dealings with this new box? What do you think of this? Do you think NHRA will continue to allow it?

We'll be taking a look at the MSD programmable ignition in a future issue. - Editor

JOK'S JUST A BABE IN THE WOODS

How absurd!! Your comment of "Personally I do not believe there is any cheating going on" was born out of naivety. Anytime there is money involved, there is cheating. I have been around drag racing for only 3 years and have personally seen 3 people barred from racing for cheating. It may not have been in relation just to wiring, delay boxes or electronics; but THEY WERE CHEATING.

Frankly I think NHRA & IHRA are understaffed and do the best they can to catch those who cheat. Those of us who try to do it the right way and have a lot of fun at the same time applaud the tech folks for their job. I do agree that just because a person is in the finals a lot does not mean they are cheating. There are some very good drivers out there and they don't need (to) cheat. That's my .02 worth.
