ABOUT FACE
Excellent commentary about Hunter S. and the changing face
of professional motor sports.
The more NHRA changes in an effort to appeal to your next
door neighbor, along with making the suits happy, the more
I go looking for the underground match races that still
continue. Just can't wait to make a little noise with my
own hot rod, do some match racing, and sell t-shirts out
of the trailer.

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW
Why isn't anyone saying Sandra & Hunter were an item?

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT
Hunter would have found Wild Willie and any other of the
AA/FA pilots I've ever met to at least be the equal to anything
he ever saw hanging around with Sonny & Co.! The short
times I've had the opportunity to just sit and talk with
guys like Willie are times I've treasured all the years
I've been involved with this sport. At Alton in the early
'60s, Tony Nancy invited me to sit with him in his tow car
on a cold day, have a Coke, and just kick around what was
happening in drag racing. Try to get a touring pro to do
that today....Tony even bought the Cokes!
Jeff, we go back a long way, and each of us has been around
the greats from our "Golden" age. The sanitized
version we've got today couldn't hold a fuel jug for those
folks! What do you think Hunter would have said about Gary
Bolger? Dale Creasy? The Surfers? The Frantic Four? Obviously
the list could go on forever, but I'm sure you get the picture...and
probably have taken them long ago.
When was the last time you saw something like what the
Surfers did at Alton in the final when they'd kicked a rod
in the semi? No spare bullet here. . .nothing but a trash
barrel, a piece of cardboard, a roll of 200mph tape. . .knock
what's left of the rod/piston to the top of the bore, pull
the pushrods outta that hole, go out and win the final on
7.
I guess what we've become is a reflection of "progress."
Even though Shawn and I have a F/C, I'd still drive 500
miles to watch AA/FA's, and I suspect so would you.

HUNTER R.I.P.
Wow. I love Hunter S. Thompson too. That article was one
of the best things I've ever read. Keep it up.
