STILL
TALKING SAFETY
Jeff, thank you for your passionate call to the sanctioning
bodies for mandatory use of head and neck restraints in light
of the tragic Shelly Howard accident.
I can't believe this is not already required and wonder what
those drivers who disdain their usage are thinking?
Mike Boyd gratefully accepted the HANS device that was given
to him, as reported in DRO a few months back, and dons it
every time he straps into the dangerous and entertaining "Winged
Express". Force and his guys refuse to wear one in while
driving their somewhat entertaining and equally dangerous
300-mph funny cars? Huh?
Thanks again for another honest and appropriate column.

I
just read your column on the HANS device. I say to you Amen!
Preach on! I drive a 6-sec Pro Mod car out here on the West
Coast. Most of the people I race with balk at the thought
of spending that kind of money on something of that nature.
These are the same people who buy the minimum SFI rated fire
suit, gloves, etc.
My view is this, in the chaotic 6 seconds that I contend
with, my safety gear is the only thing I have real control
over. My car owner agrees. My parents agree (my father is
the one who pushed me to get mine) and my wife agrees. All
those people mean the world to me. I owe it to them to use
the very best safety equipment on the planet. Period! Mandated
by NHRA or not, it is ultimately up to me to take care of
me.
Best Regards,

Great editorial, Jeff. I hope all racers read it! I can assure
you, I'd not be without the HANS.

Right on, Jeff. I pray that people will listen.
