WHERE IS ESPN'S COMMITMENT TO
NHRA?
With all the talk about NHRA not doing any kind of advertising,
other then national events on ESPN, how can the sport get
the word out there? You see shows all the time on everything
in NASCAR, from testing to inside the garages, to inside
the shops like DEI.
Why can't ESPN and NHRA get together and have shows, other
then NHRA Today, which is on once a week, and televise some
testing of the pro's. Go to the "professor's"
shop, see what's doing there. Speed Channel has something
on NASCAR every night. Why can't ESPN do the same with NHRA?
Maybe if Tom Compton got off his ass and actually did something
to help promote a great sport, he may be looked at in a
different light.
Thanks for listening.

NO FAN OF THE IDEA
(unedited letter)
Dear Mr. Burke: The picture with the hole in your head does
fit. Your ideas to change everything that exists to your
new concept as to what racing should be, is so onesided
that it totally assine.

Many people raced within the structure for a long time and
now because you and a few others think they have the greatest
idea for something new, that we change everything and follow
your second coming. Let's just throw everything out the
window and get behind this new second coming. It's like
saying I can't play in your ball game so I want to take
my ball and start a new game, with my new deal and make
it better. Great idea-- throw everything away and start
over, I can see a need for smething new but we do not have
to throw everything away. Your idea has good merit but at
the same time snubs all the racers who raced within the
current structure and for years spent their hard earned
money to build at the class they chose to compete in.
What makes you think that these new ideas will generate
more fan interest. We need both racer interest and fan interest
to make something become desirable to sponsors and track
owners. What is really needed is for the racers that are
out there to gather more support from sponsors and fans,
to be able to provide the level of competition that sells
drag racing, not just new ideas. We really need are new
ideas to stir up new interest but not to disregard what
we currently all enjoy. If we didn't love the sport, we
wouldn't care. You asked for it!

Jeff Burk (no "E") was talking about a class
which the ADRL will run this year beginning with their first
race Feb. 17-18 in Valdosta, GA. The nitro wasn't Burk's
idea, he just happens to like it. --Ed.
