FUEL ALTEREDS TODAY

Fuel Altereds still exist today, but their numbers are extremely limited.
There are some exceptions in a few of the shows, though. The Firebird
program where Fassl ran the 5.51 was officially called the U.S. Fuel
Altered Nationals and featured 11 cars qualifying for four spots. At
this year's Cordova Dragway World Series, eight fuel burners were booked,
but overall, there are probably not more than two dozen or so Fuel Altereds
that could be called on to put on a show, and of those shows, most are
four-car efforts.
Leaving aside the Nostalgia circuits, there appears to be little room
left for these fabulous cars. The match-race scene today for Top Fuel
and Funny Car is limited to maybe a half-dozen tracks, and the Fuel
Altereds are no better.
As Moore, a racer who drove Fuel Altereds for 25 years, said, "If the
Nostalgia (Goodguys, Bakersfield Hot Rod Reunion shows) stuff sticks
around, then you'll see some Fuel Altereds. Mike Sullivan, I understand,
is building one, fans know of Mike Boyd and Borsch's old altered, but
if Nostalgia went away, I think the Fuel Altereds would eventually go."
