Dragstar has a wiring diagram that is provided with every dragster
that they do the wiring on. I had some additions I wanted and they accommodated
my requests and added them to the diagram. Every wire is color-coded
and easily traceable. The one thing you might notice we're is missing
is a fuse panel. We talked about this at length and we agreed that there
are a few things we wanted protected and some items just don't need
one. Here is what we decided and everyone has to make his or her own
choices.
Items we put fuses on: Delay Box Power supply (15 amp) and Transbrake
solenoid wire (20 amp)
Items we use fusible-links on: Fuel pump power supply (40 amp) and
Water pump power supply (30 amp)
Some racers have every circuit fused. I cannot disagree with this practice
and it might be a great idea in some situations. I have a master disconnect
located next to my left hand so, if I feel there is an electrical problem,
I can shut down all power immediately. I also am sure I don't want my
fuel pump to blow a fuse just as I pull out for the final round because
the pump is hotter than normal, same for the water pump. If a blown
fuse could cost me a race I'd rather not have a fuse in that circuit.
I would choose a fusible-link wherever possible. That way you can get
by with a brief overload situation and possibly save the race versus
having to give up a race to replace the fuse.
Every situation is different and everyone has a different opinion.
On this car, where every wire is new and properly prepared, I am not
as concerned about a short-circuit as I was in my Dart that had a lot
more wiring and had been re-wired several times over the years.
