- Final assembly of front pump. If all of your
operations are done and clearances have been checked it
is time to put the two pump halves together. Before you tighten
the five bolts to 20 ft./lbs. the pump halves must be aligned.
You can use a “pump clamp” made from a very large
hose clamp that will clamp around the outer diameter of the
pump, or you can put the pump into an empty case with the 5
bolts facing out. Torque the five bolts down in a crisscross
pattern to 20 ft. lbs.
The last thing to do to the pump is
to use a “converter drive tool” or an old converter
and sit the pump down on it so the drive lugs are engaged
in the converter. When you have it in position turn the
pump on the converter to make sure the pump turns freely.
I spent a lot of time on the front pump but if you talk
to most high performance transmission builders they will
tell you that everything STARTS AT THE PUMP. If you have
low pressure the transbrake will not engage properly, bushings
will wear faster from lack of lubrication, shifts will
be sluggish, etc. Get the pump right and you will have a
lot less problems later.
In the next article, coming out on or about January 21st,
I will dive into the High Gear Drum and clutches, the planetary
gear set and the reverse clutch and piston modifications
and assembly.
Thanks for reading this article, hope you learned something.
I have really been intrigued and have enjoyed diving into
the Power-Glide. Now might be the time to order The Power-Glide
Handbook and start reading!!!
