Big bucks go to NHDRO Grudge Spectacular winners

Chris Moore tuned his Motec-controlled, DME-built, turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa to be the class of the sixteen-bike field all through Friday testing and racing on Saturday, April 14, at Atlanta Dragway. Since this was a Performance Racing Products Grudge race, no times, incrementals, or reaction times were shown.

See the race report at here.

The NHDRO is back in the Midwest at Dragway 42 in West Salem, Ohio, for the Liguori Drag Racing May Bike Fest on May 4-6.

Nicholson makes ‘Old Guy’s Last Stand

Jok Nicholson, DRO’s Bracket Racing Editor, and his wife, Barb (who never misses a race) have decided to make an “Old Guy’s Last Stand” and use the rear-engine dragster Nicholson has been racing and writing tech articles about in DRO for 17 years, “Project 4-Link”.

This dragster (now known as “RED”) is the most written about and read about magazine tech-featured car in history, from building the entire car from the tubing to its national event win with a variety of Mopar engines until they switched to BB Chevy power eight years ago.

Now the Nicholsons will prep the car with the best and most consistent parts they have found over 47 years of racing. See the beginning of this new project at Dead-On

Gaydosh races for autism awareness at Houston

April is ‘Autism Awareness Month’ and featured prominently on John Gaydosh‘s Performance Chevrolet Camaro during the NHRA Spring Nationals will be a decal promoting Pathfinders for Autism.

"My nephew Kolton has autism, so it really hits close to home for us. We wanted to do something to bring awareness and help the cause,” said Gaydosh. “Pathfinders for Autism is an amazing group helping families with autistic children in the Maryland area."

Pathfinders for Autism was founded 18 years ago by a group of parents that included Baltimore Orioles Hall of Famer, William “B.J.” Surhoff, and his wife, Polly.

This will be Gaydosh's first time to Houston racing his fuel injected Pro Stock Camaro. He will once again be running a motor supplied by Chris McGaha from Harlow Sammons, Southwest Performance & Machine.

"This car is just flying. I've never gone this fast in a fuel injected Pro Stock,” said Gaydosh. "In Gainesville I was able to get used to the new power and figure out how she runs. We also had a new clutch system last race, which accounted for my delayed reaction time in round one. But now we have everything is good and so I'm excited to race in Houston."

Milan Dragway opens season on April 21

Michigan’s Milan Dragway will open the 2018 season with two days of test & tunes on Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22. The first racing event will be Liberty’s Gears No ET Nationals on Saturday, April 28.

Give us your opinion

We’ve watched the number of ‘No Time” racing events increase this year and the Agent and staff of DRO have mixed opinions about them. So, we ask you readers, do you want us to report results of no-time events? Or are the speeds and ET’s important to you?

Drop us a note at editor@dragracingonline.com with the subject line: No Time. And we thank you for your time to give us your thoughts!

Summit to back Haney for three NHRA Pro Mod races

Driving a nitrous-boosted 2015 Summit Racing Camaro owned by three-time NHRA Pro Mod World Champion Rickie Smith and tuned by Brandon Switzer, Keith Haney will make his NHRA Pro Mod debut next month (May 18-20) at Topeka, KS, with additional outings in September at St. Louis and the following month in Dallas, TX.

Haney has had success in both Pro Mod and Drag Radial within the Mid-

West Pro Mod Series last year and this year had a runner-up finish in Radial vs. the World at Lights Out 9 in February, another runner-up in RvW at the Mid-West series season opener in early March, a semifinals appearance at the elite Sweet 16 RvW event later that month, and picked up the RvW win just a couple of weeks ago for Radial Revenge at Tulsa Raceway Park, a track he co-owns with fellow racer Todd Martin.

Haney promises to bring a different attitude to the E3 Spark Plugs Pro Mod Series.

“I'm going to figure out if I can get with NHRA, because the very first pass I make down an NHRA race track, I'm calling Stevie [Jackson] out. Maybe me and him will have a little grudge race on top of qualifying. Hell, if he wants to go every one of the qualifying rounds against each other, I'll do that.” Haney added. “And anybody else that has a little bit of oomph, if they want a piece of 'You Know My Name,' they know where to find me. I'm going to be in the NHRA Pro Mod pits and they can come find me anytime they want.”

Perivolaris gets 19th Spring Fling win on Wednesday

Racing at the K&N Spring Fling Million began Wednesday with over 400 entries. Wednesday’s winner received $30,000 with over $60K in prizes and awards randomly handed out.

With dragsters and door cars running separately until round six, by round seven there were eight cars left, evenly split between the two. The racers were Andy Schmall, Peeps Pennington, Dom Meziere, Bradley Johnson, Jack Sadler, Marko Perivolaris, Buddy Ferrell and George Lewis.

Sadler turned on the red light to advance Johnson, Meziere took the win light against Lewis, Pennington ran out to move Ferrell ahead, and Perivolaris used a better reaction time to advance over Schmall. Three dragsters stacked against the one door car of Meziere for the semifinals.

In the first half of the semis, Johnson, who was the big winner two weeks earlier at the Four-Wide NHRA Nationals, turned it red against former ‘Fling winner Perivolaris, while on the other side, Meziere, an NHRA national event winner, and his fast door car used a better reaction to take the best of Ferrell. And so, the final was door car vs. dragster; two California drivers who know where the winner’s circle is.

With Perivolaris receiving the head start, both drivers had good reaction times, but it was the Perivolaris who in his first three rounds of eliminations today had a .000, .000, and a .001 reaction times to start his day. Perivolaris won the last day at the 2017 version of the Spring Fling Million and with this the first day of the event, he has stretched his wins at the ‘Fling to 19 straight wins.

Thursday will find competitors going straight into eliminations with no time trials, for another $30,000-to-win day. It will also highlight the Racepak Bounty Reward for the person who beats Wednesday’s winner. The main event is the Million contested on Friday, where the actual payout is dependent on the actual number of cars in competition but is guaranteed to be at least $200,000.

Team Jegs sends three Coughlins to Division 1 season opener

After running a handful of events in 2017 to get a feel for her JEGS.com Super Comp dragster, Paige Coughlin will begin what she hopes will be an expanded schedule of races in 2018. Paige is a high school senior who will be attending Miami University in Ohio later this year.

Team JEGS racers Mike Coughlin, Troy Coughlin Jr. and Paige Coughlin are heading to Virginia Motorsports Park for "Power in the Park," the opening race on the Northeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series schedule. Tickets to this weekend’s event are free.

"We're very much looking forward to this race for a number of reasons," said Mike Coughlin, a two-time Division 3 champion and driver of the JEGS.com Top Dragster. "First of all, my guys -- Greg Cody, Dave Raurk, Ryan Micke and Tony Collier -- have this car better than it's ever been. Without question, it's one of the top cars in the world and it's certainly capable of winning any race. That's exciting.

"I'm also happy to have another chance to race with my nephew T.J. as he continues his new role driving the McPhillips nitro dragster, and his little sister Paige, my niece, will be racing in Super Comp. Plus, their dad Troy and sister Meghan and my youngest son Clay are coming, so we'll have a big group. Our family grew up racing together and it's really what we live to do more than anything else. Seeing the next generation come along makes things that much better."

Weld Wheels to award ‘Perfect Light’ prize to UNFC racers

When the United Nitro Funny Car Championship raced at Tucson Dragway on April 13-14 there was an added incentive for drivers to sharpen their starting line prowess.

WELD Wheels announced competition for the UNFC Perfect Light during United Nitro Funny Car Championship races. WELD Wheels will award a pair of Perfect 16 x 16 Beadlock Wheels to the first UNFC driver to leave the starting line with a perfect .000 reaction time.

If no UNFC driver leaves the starting line with a .000 reaction time during eliminations, the closest to a Perfect Light will be awarded two Perfect Wheels from WELD at completion of the 2018 United Nitro Funny Car Championship. To be eligible for the WELD Wheels Perfect Light prize, a driver must prominently display a WELD Wheels decal on the side of his nitro funny car in both qualifying and eliminations during United Nitro Funny Car championship races.

With a .080 reaction time in the semifinal round of eliminations, Jason Rupert is the current front-runner for the UNFC Perfect Light award with four events left.
