Bloodhound is resuscitated

Following the announcement last week that Project Bloodhound would be scrapped, a Yorkshire, England-based entrepreneur has stepped up to save the initiative to build a 1,000-mph land vehicle.

 

Ian Warhurst has purchased the business and assets of Bloodhound Programme Ltd., and will continue the project.

 

“Ian has a strong background in managing highly successful businesses in the automotive engineering sector and he will bring considerable expertise to bear in taking the project forward,” said Andrew Sheridan, Joint Administrator with Geoff Rowley of the Programme. “He will be outlining his plans for the project in detail early in the New Year.”  (Tom McCarthy photo)   [12/17/18]

NMCA will host five Chevrolet Performance Challenge events in 2019

The NMCA Muscle Car Nationals will host five Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series events in 2019. The five-race series that is focused on modern LS/LT performance will be run during the NMCA All-Star Nationals at Atlanta Dragway (Commerce, GA) April 4-7; Homecoming at Memphis International Raceway (Millington, TN) May 2-5; NMRA/NMCA Nitto Tire Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing at Route 66 Raceway (Joliet, IL) July 25-28; NMCA All-American Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park (Norwalk, OH) August 22-25; and the NMCA World Street Finals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis September 19-22.

 

In addition, the 13th Annual LSX Shootout returns home to Memphis International Raceway, the site of the original event that helped kick-off the LS drag racing craze in 2007. The official championship categories for the Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series are CP Stock, presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center, Proform Rumble, and LME Street King.

 

The Brian Tooley Racing Real Shootout, hosted during the LSX Shootout, will once again receive a championship ring and participate in the Champions Dinner during the PRI Show. It retains the same format as last year with the field including the quickest LS/LT powered Edelbrock Xtreme Street entries.

 

Every NMCA event will feature the popular Chevrolet Performance Street Car Challenge, offering a limited free-entry promotion to the first 75 cars.     [12/17/18]

Three days, three racetracks, 342 miles

If you’re looking to make a tour of the Midwest in June, here’s an event for you.

 

The Summit Racing Equipment Midwest Drags will take place over three days at three racetracks. The event starts Wednesday, June 5, at Wagler Motorsports Park in Lyons, IN, then moves on to Muncie (IN) Dragway on June 6 and ends at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, OH, on Friday the 7th.

 

Twelve classes will be competing, including diesels, for this unique drag and drive event. At the two Indiana tracks racers will be competing on the eighth mile, with the full 1320 feet at Norwalk.    [12/17/18]

Santa Pod adds six new events for 2019

If you’re headed to England’s Santa Pod Raceway there will six new events on the 2019 schedule.

 

April 28: The Vauxhall Show

May 4-5: The Springspeed Nationals (A tribute to the recently closed Shakespeare County Raceway where this national sportsman event ran for many years.)

June 2: Das Auto Show (German cars)

June: 30: The Fast Show Reloaded (A second date following the April show)

July 7: The Ford Show (Racing and a car show)

Aug. 17-18: Green Light Nationals (Sportsman event)

Honorees announced for International Drag Racing Hall of Fame

The honorees for Don Garlits’ International Drag Racing Hall of Fame have been announced.

 

Texas Whips: The Carroll Brothers, William “Bones” and Curt, were Top Fuel dragster owners from Texas during the 1960s through the early ‘80s. Drivers for the team included Kenny Bernstein, Buddy Cortines, Bob Gibson, David Pace, Dave Settles and Richard Tharp.

 

Rupp & Dakin: Gary Rupp and Pat Dakin raced Top Fuel mostly during the 1970s with team owner Rupp handled crew chief duties and Dakin driving. The Ohio team retired from competition in 1977 but returned in 1989 and won the IHRA Top Fuel championship. Dakin returned to driving after Rupp’s retirement.

 

The Iron Horse Team: The Utah team of Dan Richins (owner, driver) and Rex Pearmain, crew chief, raced Top Fuel in the 1970s. At the NHRA Supernationals in 1973 they became the first Donovan Hemi-powered car in the Cragar 5-Second Club.

 

Mike Lewis: Lewis has been involved in drag racing his entire life. His grandfather, Alfred Stauffer, built Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, PA, and Lewis began driving in 1970. He went into track management, serving as an NHRA Vice President and later General Manager of Indianapolis Raceway Park. He joined Don Schumacher Racing as VP, a position he still holds, along with serving as President of Maple Grove Raceway. He still finds time to race in select nostalgia drag racing events.

 

Ted Dzus Jr.: The Dzus fastener was the brainchild of Ted’s grandfather, William, who worked for a Long Island, NY, aircraft company in the 1930s. Following World War II, mechanics adapted it to the racecar market. Ted Jr. became President of the company after his father’s death in 1982, expanding the company with other automotive and aerospace products including medical hardware. His own drag racing cars include a 1973 Vega, a 1980 Chevette, and a 1955 Chevy.

 

Founder’s Award: The late Ed Justice Sr. was one of three brothers (along with Zeke and Gus) were early leaders in the automotive lubricant and fuel additives market in the 1950s. Ed ran sales, Gus was the accountant, and Zeke developed and tested new products. The Justice Brothers was the first corporate sponsor of Don Garlits.

 

Patricia Garlits Memorial Award: Lynn Prudhomme, wife of Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, is the recipient of this award named for Don Garlits’ late wife, Pat, to honor a woman involved with drag racing who has “exhibited a selfless devotion to the growth and betterment of the sport.” She is one of the founders of the Drag Racing Association of Women (DRAW).

 

The induction dinner and ceremony will take place in Gainesville, Fla. on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Wyndham Garden Gainesville Hotel.  The Cocktail Hour begins at 6 PM EDT, with dinner served at 7 PM.  Tickets are priced at $100 for individual seats, with corporate sponsor tables priced at $1,000.  Tickets are available by calling the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing (toll free) at (877) 271-3278. Melling earns manufacturers award

Engine Parts Group Inc., also known as Engine Pro, has recognized three automotive aftermarket manufacturers for their business performance achievements over the past year. The awards were presented at Engine Pro’s recent annual shareholder meeting in Dallas.

 

The Good Stewardship Award was presented to the supplier who has maintained superior marketing practices along with sales and marketing assistance. That award was earned by Melling Engine Parts, returning sponsor of the Elite Motorsports Pro Stock Chevrolet driven by Erica Enders.
