Torrence nominated for ESPY Best Driver award

Coming as no surprise considering the season he had last year, Steve Torrence has been nominated as Best Driver of 2018 for the ESPY Awards.

Just as a reminder, Torrence won 11 races in 2018, including six straight in the Countdown, and clinched his first NHRA Top Fuel championship – an unprecedented performance.

Four winners in double-header for Pro Gas and Super Street at Fontana

Pete Bothe and Mike Blodgett Jr. each picked up wins in the Southern California Pro Gas Assoc., series doubleheader weekend race at Auto Club Dragway, while Dennis Blehm and Kevin McClelland shared the winner’s circle for the SoCal Super Street series.

Bothe and Blodgett have each been to two final rounds in the four races contested this season, Bothe winning twice and Blodgett with a win and runner-up. Bothe holds a slim 8-point advantage in the standings.

Blodgett (far lane) won Saturday’s race running .002 off the 9.90 index for the win as Daniel McClelland broke-out by .01. Semifinalists for the Meziere Enterprises-sponsored race was Steve Parsons and Ernie Macias.

Sunday’s Pro Gas race was won by four-time series champion Bothe, driving his ’78 Porsche to a 9.940, 143.06 mph win over second place Mark Fenton. The race was sponsored by K&N Filters and Lucas Oil Products.

The SoCal Super Street group held their fifth and sixth races of the season over the Father’s Day weekend, where Kevin Houmard drove his wild blown-Chevy Camaro the both final rounds but came up short from the win. Dennis Blehm (near lane) won his first Super Street series race when Houmard red-lighted in the RPM Racing-sponsored final round. Kevin McClelland and John Sapone were semifinalists.

Sunday’s race was sponsored by Able Wire EDM, Inc., and 2018 Pro Gas series champ picked up the win driving his son’s Malibu wagon. Dan McClelland ran 10.904 on the 10.90 index to Houmard’s 10.905. McClelland had a .001 advantage at the starting line.

The Pro Gas season continues June 29 and 30 at Auto Club Dragway and the Super Street series returns August 10 and 11.

Bogan is back in a big way

A decade after his most recent national event victory at the Texas Motorplex in 2009, Monty Bogan returned to the NHRA stage in a big way this season with a pair of wins and three final rounds.

At the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals he posted a win in Super Stock and a runner-up finish in Stock, then Bogan struck gold again in Bristol, where he claimed the Stock title in his D/SA ’67 Camaro. Bogan now has four wins in six final rounds.

A cold day in Norwalk for Wilkerson?

Tim Wilkerson's Ford Mustang Funny Car will feature a brand new, one-race design this weekend at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals. His 330+ mph machine will feature the striking logo of Polar Air Compressor, a division of Eaton Compressor.

"Mr. Levi [Dick Levi, of Levi, Ray & Shoup] allows us a one-race deal every year to highlight one of our great associate sponsors, and this year we're proud to do it with Polar Air Compressors," said Wilkerson.

Drivers double-down

It’s becoming normal this season for pro drivers to compete in more than one category. At Norwalk this week Bo Butner will drive in Pro Stock and Factory Stock, Erica Enders and Alex Laughlin will drive in Pro Stock and Pro Mod, and Leah Pritchett will compete in Top Fuel and Factory Stock. It makes for a busy weekend.

Hays Twister Full Race Torque Converter

Holley announces the release of Hays Twister Full Race Torque Converters for GM 6L80E 6-speed automatic transmissions. Designed specifically for blown, nitrous, and turbocharged trans-brake applications and strong enough to withstand the punishment of 1000-horsepower engines, they're available in four different stall-speed ranges: 2400-2800, 2800-3200, 3200-3600, and 3600-4200. They're internally welded (not brazed) for longer life and greater consistency and, in select areas, spray-welded. Heavy-duty Torrington bearings and carefully selected stators with high-flow vents and channels promote cooling, a custom-designed anti-balloon plate prevents converter swelling, and each one is inspected during every step of assembly and hand-built.
