NEW CLASS FOR DOORSLAMMERS
IN
GOODGUYS? PT II
File this under de-bunked rumors. The one the
Agent heard concerning a new doorslammer class
Goodguys that supposedly was going to be a Pro
Street type turns out to be absolutely false
according to Goodguy's Marc Meadors, who told
us, "We've got more cars and classes than we
need now!" [6-14-2004]

Jeff Burk mistakenly referenced the championship-winning
Fuel Funny Car for the 1992 NHRA season in his
current Burk's Blast as being backed by Joe
Gibbs. The fact is the Cruz Pedregon-driven
McDonald's-backed car was owned by Larry Minor.
In that same column Burk also stated that the
last 32-car field was at the 1979 25th U.S.
Nationals. The fact is the 1980 U.S. Nationals
also had a 32-car field. The Burkster wishes
to thank noted

racing historian Bret Kepner, among others,
for setting him straight on those two errors.
We also had incorrect info under some of the
U.S. Nats coverage from the 1955 race. We now
have the right info as well as better info on
the Perryville, Arizona finals and what turned
out to be the Arizona State Chanpionships. Thanks
go to Mr. Potvin, Mr. Kepner and others for
that help.
From reader Dale Epp comes the identification
for the unknown photo in Tom Schiltz's U.S.
Nationals photo essay: "The dragster is the
'Dailey & Johnson' TF car out of Washington
state. 'Gentleman' Hank Johnson was the driver/owner
and it was sponsored by a milk/dairy company
if I recall. This Don Long car was one of the
last front engined cars to be competitive with
the RE cars. The photo was taken at Indy in
1972 at the race that fellow Canuck Gary Beck
beat Jerry Ruth in the final. Most of the fuel
teams had already converted to the rear engined
configuration." [6-14-2004]
