GRAY TO FINISH OUT THE SEASON WITH LIPAR RACING...MAYBE
The Agent
talked with
Von Smith at
Indy who told
him that he
would like
to get back
into the Tommy
Lipar-owned
Pro Mod as
soon as the
NHRA event at Dallas but that he will have
to wait until he gets clearance from his doctors.
The problem for Smith is that the doctors had
to split his sternum to perform the life-saving
heart surgery and the danger of damage the
G-forces created
from driving
a race car
might do to
the sternum
while it is
healing may
keep Smith
out of the
car until after
the season
is over and
keep substitute
driver Tommy
Gray in the
seat. [9-9-2004]

In reference to an earlier 1320 note concerning
the much anticipated completion of the drag strip
in Banning, CA, DRO received this clarification
from Charlie Neilson, NHRA division director: “The
Pacific Division office has recently learned
that plans for the new track, Mopar Drag City
in Banning, CA, are now moving along very quickly.
Like any new facility, unforeseen ‘bumps’ in
the planning/construction road have been overcome
and look for more announcements in the near future.
The division office is very pleased to hear that
these ‘bumps’ have been overcome
and is looking forward to the opening of the
NHRA Member Track.” (DRO file photo) [9-9-2004]
