SOUTHERN DRAGWAY UPDATE
Our sources in south-central Georgia tell us that the
recently-sold Southern Dragway in Douglas went for $305,000
plus $47,000 for a remaining second mortgage. The buyer
was long-time track promoter Tim Pafford, who ran U.S.
19 Dragway in Albany, Georgia. The
sale took place literally
on the courthouse steps. There were six other bidders.
Pafford will hold a drivers meeting May 6 at 9:30 p.m.
at the track, to tell the regulars know what's what. Pafford
will reveal that Southern Dragway will continue to fly
the IHRA flag, and it will be open practically year-round,
for testing and tuning on Friday nights and brackets on
Saturday, with special shows like Pro Modifieds thrown
in from time to time. [5-5-2005]
A 300-MPH ANYTHING GETS OUR ATTENTION
A team of British engineers are trying to break the speed
record for an electric car powered by 52 batteries with
no mechanical gears. Designer Colin Fallows and driver
Mark Newby are attempting to break the current Federation
Internationale d'Automobile (FIA) record of 245 mph on
a Nevada highway. The state of Nevada shut down a 12-mile
stretch of state Route 93A south of Wendover, Utah on May
5, but gusty winds and mechanical problems prevented the
record attempt. The group plans to try again Friday and
are expecting a 300-plus mph run. (photo
