Randy Adler of Tinley Park, IL came out of nowhere last
year to win the AutoZone Super Chevy Show's Mickey Thompson
Nitro Coupe Challenge in his rookie season. Adler began
the 2005 title chase the same way with strong wins in the
season's first two events, but then began to have some
problems with his '57 Chevy Nitro Coupe. But he banished
all thoughts of a sophomore jinx May 15 at Norwalk Raceway
Park as Adler not only took the win, but also laid down
the fastest ET of the season.
Ken Walsh, Mr. 409, brought
some old-fashioned muscle to the Ohio fans. |
Adler ran a 6.289 at 223.62 miles per hour in the finals
to defeat California's Wayne Torkelson, who is the current
Nitro Coupe points leader. Torkelson ran a final round
6.433 at 217.21 mph. The real news for Adler, though, was
his first round blast of 6.257 seconds at 223.47 miles
per hour, the quickest run of the year by a WorkMat.net
Nitro Coupe.
Split-window 1963 Corvettes ruled in the Top Sportsman
class at Norwalk. Adrian, Michigan's Jackie Sloan was the
Trim Parts Low Qualifier with a 7.068 at 195.70 miles per
hour in his Corvette. In the finals, though, it was Chris
Talevich in his '63 Vette edging Sloan for the win. (photos
