Matt Hartford came all the way from Phoenix, AZ to compete at the U.S. Street
Nationals with his Summit-backed Sport Compact. He ran 6.824/202.33 in
his 202 c.i. turbo Cavalier to qualify 18th in Outlaw Pro Street. Tommy
D'Aprile sent him packing in the first round.
Annette Summer ripped off a 6.508/225.45 which landed her in the Number Three
position and gave her top speed of the meet. Unfortunately, she was a
no-show for the first round in her twin turbo '63 Corvette.
Brian
Robbins and Tim O'Hare came out just after the
semi-final round to make a couple of test passes. O'Hare
had struggled all weekend only running a 7.12/190.71 to
qualify 22nd. He lost in the first round to Randall
Haynes' '02 'Vette. A 6.723/207.37 was all Haynes
needed to stop O'Hare's losing 7.08/155.95. After
the first round O'Hare came out and ran a fine 6.60. He
seemed to have found the gremlins. Robbins had lasted
until Round Three with Keith Engling's Hurst Olds. Both
cars left the line and O'Hare streaked to a 6.56. Robbins'
dry sump tank split about a hundred feet out and the big
Olds turned left and slammed the left lane guardrail, then
turned right and headed for the right side rail and slammed
the right side into the rail with the chutes out, sliding
to a halt at the thousand foot mark. Robbins climbed
out unhurt, but the beautiful Olds will need some major
cosmetic surgery. The ensuing cleanup and the fact
that a fog bank was rolling in and soon would cover the
track caused the track management to call the race in the
interest of safety.
