Larry Pettit drove George Doty's Crazy Horse '71 Mustang to the #4 position with a 6.616 and improved to a 6.429 at 230.06. After problems with the ignition in the second round Pettit returned under the VRA break rule losing in the final to Larry Savage. Spotted in the Crazy Horse pits was Danny Pisano, son of Carmen Pisano of Venolia Pistons fame, who may bring out his nitro nostalgia flopper by mid-season. (James Drew photo)

DRO's Jeff "Killah" Utterback began his second full season driving Jeff Gaynor's Bob Godfrey-painted '70 'Cuda with tuning help from veteran nitro tuner/driver Dale Pulde. The Jeffs qualified 5th with 6.691 at 218.71, yielding the first round with severe tire shake to Horan's Mustang. Also, ex-alcohol dragster Champ Gary Turner was taking notes to prepare for the mid-season debut of his nostalgia nitro flopper. Turner awaits delivery of a Plymouth Arrow body. Plans are for crewmember Chris Krabil to drive the car.

Steve Nichols brought the Mill Road Boys '70 Camaro towing all the way from Newark, Delaware to fulfill a personal dream to compete at the March Meet. West coast nitro Chevy tuner Gene Amaya has been working with the boys to get their combination sorted out, unfortunately they "windowed" their steel big-block in the second qualifying session on a 6.736 pass. The Boys brought an aluminum Arias Chevy out to replace the injured motor for Sunday eliminations. In the first round against Mike Adams, Nichols had a large lead to mid-track, but got loose and had to lift. (Darr Hawthorne photo)
