The Flamed Fortune Corvette had some
gremlins. Bob Godfrey failed to qualify for the field with
their new Plueger-built chassis and aluminum Olds sporting
Alan Johnson heads. Godfrey and Wes Close will soon be changing
the body to a '69 Camaro for the Pomona event. (James Drew

Nathan and Howard Bugg brought out their
new Buick Starfire-bodied Funny Car, but did not qualify
even with help from Chuck Worsham as they put the rods out
in the second qualifying session. The team finished assembly
of the new car as the body was being mounted for the first
round of qualifying. (James Drew photo)
Event winner Mike Savage--driving Jim
Broome's Dodge Challenger--brought a brand new combination
with Chrysler Hemi-power, having switched over the winter
from a Chevy. Savage qualified third with a 6.516 at 219.08
improving on every pass of eliminations with 6.459, 6.391
and a solid 6.333 at 223.60 in the final against Pettit
who had a slight lead off the starting line. (James Drew

With so many Funny Cars currently under
construction including Steve Romanazzi's Vega, Mark Roy's
Plymouth Satellite, Gary Turner's Plymouth Arrow, DeWayne
Patton's Monza and the Blue Max replica being built by Chuck
Worsham, these Funny Car fields will become harder to qualify
for. Predictions are for at least 16 cars making the staging
lanes at the 8th Pomona Nitro Nationals in August at the
Fairplex. Based upon the March Meet, nitro floppers put
on a competitive show and are still a crowd favorite.
