A
pair of second-generation Camaros reached the final round
of the Holcomb Motorsports Outlaw 6.0 index class, with
Nicky Ewing (near lane) taking the win. Ewing ran 6.057
while Mike Jones broke out with a 5.981-second pass. "The
car had a 1.31 60-foot time, which was its best all weekend,
and it just didn’t slow down enough on the top end," Jones
explained. "The right lane got better as the day went
on."
Former
NHRA Pro Stock Truck racer Taylor Lastor was at Huntsville
with a turbocharged 2003 Corvette entered in the Outlaw
10.5 class. He plans to hit all six points-paying ORSCA
events this season. Lastor said he’s also having
a 1968 Pro Mod Camaro built at Skinny Kid Racecars with
a big-block turbo between the pipes and plans to make his
NHRA Pro Mod debut by the end of this year. He qualified
13th among 23 entries at Huntsville and had Brian Goethe
covered in the first round on Sunday until a fitting on
the air bottle broke. "That was the second one this
week," he said. "That had never happened to me
before; there’s just too much vibration, I think."
Kevin
Thompson (far lane) said he’s raced his naturally
aspirated 461 Olds-equipped 1970 F-85 as a bracket car
since 1989, but the Huntsville event was his first experience
in ORSCA 7.0 action. The change of venue apparently agreed
with the Glasgow, KY-based racer as he defeated Jason Young
and his Mustang in a double breakout 7.0 final, 6.989 to
6.985. "I had to run the right lane in the final
for the first time all day and it picked up about a hundredth," Thompson
said.
Stephan
Stringer qualified his ’68 Camaro second in Outlaw
Automatic and made it to the semis, where he fell to eventual
race winner Ronnie Davis.
