OPEN OUTLAW
The Open Outlaw class was pretty much a Top
Dragster show with one Alcohol Funny Car thrown
in for spice. Don Florence came south from Andover,
MA to qualify numero uno at 6.240/204.91. Florence
ran Low E.T. of 5.96 on a bye run in round one,
and then defeated Ed Arbruscato and Rick Rozemia
to move into the final.
On the other side of the ladder, Charlie Gambino's
2000 Corvette (photo) set Top Speed at 232.01
and took out Ken Gonyo and Tim Butler.
This set an interesting final, as Florence
had the clear advantage over Gambino. Gambino
took a chance and deep-staged, which may have
thrown off Florence, who trailed Gambino off
the line .052 to .462. Florence's 6.375/209.98
couldn't catch the 'Vette which won with a 6.523/205.85.
Matthew Gilmore qualified his '32 Bantam third
at 6.382/216.86. He won thr first round, but
was unable to return for the second.
TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER
TAD was dominated by Guy Kelly, who qualified
No. 1, set Low E.T. (5.347) and Top Speed (265.25)
and won the race. Ronnie Swearington tuned the
Alabama-based dragster.
