BACK IN SHAPE
Cordova Dragway Park has a veritable potpourri
of sideshow attractions in their manufacturer's
area and, hands down, the best was the Palmer
Chiropractic College's tent. Palmer, located
across the river in Davenport, Iowa, was first
brought into the IHRA fold at Cordova's spring
U.S. Open of Drag Racing. It's four beds and
no waiting, and a youthful staff that knows
how to pop necks and crack backs. For a person
with six lumbar vertebrae (1 in 40,000 people
are stuck with this deformity), a place like
this was a godsend. You put a lot of miles on
your feet at a drag race (the arena is a quarter-mile
long) and this place saved mine and the Burkster's
life ... well, at least, our backs.
THE FIRST EVER WINNER AT THE
50th WORLD SERIES
Nope, it wasn't Garlits, Muldowney, or Zach Barklage. On Friday night, eight alcohol Funny Cars were run "Chicago-style" and the winner was Lance VanHauen out of Iowa in the James Roling Chevrolet entry. Van Hauen put down Larry Bakke in the final with an unneeded 6.45/185.26 when the latter broke behind the line.
AND ON THE SUBJECT OF ALCOHOL FUNNY CARS
The winner of the show was "Capt." Ray Drew
in Randy Henning's "Starship Enterprise" 2000
Mustang. Drew wheeled the long-time UDRA competitor's
Ford to a final round 6.30, 227.27 to cover
Dan Crownhart's (lead photo by Jeff Burk) 6.36/201.42
in the "50th Anniversary World Series of Drag
Racing" 2001 Corvette. The Crownharts really
worked hard towards he success of the event,
running two Alcohol Funny Cars and a jet Funny
Car, all running the "50th Anniversary" logo.
