Rob Golobo said his team
"struggled a lot" during qualifying after trying
out some different timing combinations on the
632 c.i. Mike Moran-built engine in his 2002
SS Camaro. Still, the Whitelake, MI-based driver
started third, then went all the way to the
Nostalgia Pro Street final against Ross Stomp.
Both drivers left with identical .460 reactions,
but Golobo won with a 7.661 at 182.30 against
Stomp's 7.715 at 176.01 mph. "I knew he was
hurt," Golobo said, "but I also knew we couldn't
take him for granted."
It was a long tow from
Oshkosh, WI, but Nick Rinehart made it worthwhile
by winning the Extreme Street final in Atlanta
against Bob Curran. Rinehart also set a new
class speed record in the final, with an 8.503-secs
pass at 165.33 mph in his Patterson Racing Engines-equipped
1972 Nova.
David Parris, from Waynesville,
NC, had to first beat an overheating problem
in his 400 c.i. '74 Nova before beating the
'71 Maverick of Brad Crumley in the Nostalgia
Muscle Car final. It was Parris' career-first
win since joining the class three years ago,
but he usually drives a 1970 Buick GS that was
out of commission for suspension work. "That
may have to change now," he said.
