DRUMS BRANCACCIO MEMORIAL FUND TO BENEFIT DRAW THIS SEASON

When Larry "Drums" Brancaccio crashed at Cordova Dragway, May 29, 2015, during a race event his community rallied around but the financial support of DRAW made his one-year recovery a little easier.

Drums was rushed by ambulance to the University Hospital of Iowa and underwent two major surgeries. He was then airlifted to Alaris Rehab in Kearny, NJ, where he remained for four months as he worked hard to regain the use of his arms and legs, all of which had been broken in the crash.

After his release from Alaris, Brancaccio rejoined his team to work on restoring his nitro Harley drag bike. The only thing that stopped Drums was a massive heart attack last Oct. 25 at his home in Nutley, NJ.

During his fight to recover, Brancaccio received help from Drag Racing Association of Women and now the Drums Memorial Fund for DRAW will allow fans and friends to contribute to DRAW at every NHRA event at which the Top Fuel Harley's compete. At the races, fans can stop by Bad Apple Racing's pits where a memorial poster will be available. Donations will be gathered by members of DRAW at each event on Sunday afternoon. [

ADRL RETURNS TO THE ROCK

Can the ADRL set attendance records again at Rockingham Dragway?

This year the ADRL Spring Drags (April 7-8) will bring much more to Rockingham Dragway than just the sport’s biggest Pro Modified stars and the promise of world record-setting performances.

It will mark the return of the free admission format initiated by ADRL president Kenny Nowling more than 10 years ago and it will include three different classes of Pro Mods, racing at both the eighth-mile and quarter-mile distances. But other than that the race will bear little resemblance to the one that drew the largest one-day crowd in Rockingham Dragway history in 2006.

For one thing, a new Friday-Saturday format will insure nighttime finals. For another, the field for the first time will include Pro Alcohol Funny Cars, Pro Alcohol Dragsters and Top Fuel Harleys in addition to Pro Mods, Outlaw Pro Stock cars and Pro Extreme Motorcycles.

And, finally, Nowling’s acknowledged flare for the dramatic means a full complement of fireworks and an exhibition by the one-of-a-kind “Black Pearl” Nova Pro Mod jet car to close the show on Saturday night.

“’Champagne Kenny’ is constantly tweaking the format,” Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood said of the ADRL president, “and I think that Saturday night finals, the NHRA Pro Mod class running on the quarter mile, and the inclusion of the Top Fuel Harleys will really appeal to our fans.”

In addition to Pro Mod, Pro Stock, Pro Alcohol and very extreme motorcycles, champions also will be crowned in Top Sportsman, Top Dragster, Top Bracket and in two Jr. Dragster categories.

NHRA EXPANDS CACKLEFEST AND PARKING SPACE AT HOT ROD REUNIONS

The Holley National Hot Rod Reunion presented by AAA Insurance and California Hot Rod Reunion presented by Automobile Club of Southern California are returning to their traditional formats for the 2017 season.

After causing much consternation and condemnation last year by down-sizing the activities at CHRR, the popular Cacklefest®, which originated with the 2000 California Hot Rod Reunion, will continue to feature the crowd-pleasing push starts and display of dozens of nitro-burning machines of the past. Adding to the excitement, the California event will include the popular exhibition push starts throughout each day that were part of the 25th Anniversary program.

For those who restore and maintain these magnificent machines, the Reunions will also be allocating more pit space to allow an even greater number of spectators to see and hear the cars up close as they are readied for their Cacklefest appearances.

The Hot Rod Reunions are produced by the NHRA Motorsports Museum and benefit the facility located in Pomona, Calif.

MATHESON WILL RACE AT SANTO’S SUPER THUNDER

Australia’s quickest man on two wheels, Chris Matheson, has been working behind the scenes with his team to perfect his Nitro Voodoo Top Fuel Motorcycle.

They will see if all the work has paid off as the race at Santo’s Super Thunder event April 14 at Willowback Raceway.

It is a short format with one qualifying pass and then eliminations.

“We have run some good numbers in the past at Willowbank – 6.04 at 241 mph – and it has been the scene of a number of championship wins for our team,” Matheson said. “Our best ET result in the last 12 months has been a 6.14-sec, a tenth off our current national record.”

Matheson added, “We have improved the bike out of sight in the last few years, however, its real potential hasn’t been unlocked as yet, but it will.”

New Product of the Day

Chill-Its® Cooling Arm Sleeves

When you’re working on your race car at a hot track this year, this new product from Ergodyne may give some relief. Chill-Its®6690 Cooling Arm Sleeves activate instantly when wet, using evaporation for extended cooling and protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Made of an advanced cooling material, the 6690 Cooling Arm Sleeves activate by first being saturated with water and then exposed to air. The combination of water and air flow help the arm sleeves wick moisture away from the body to create an evaporative cooling effect. Machine-washable and reusable, the sleeves also cool key pulse points, shield skin from the sun with UPF 50+ protection, and even guard against light levels of abrasion. Even when dry, they absorb sweat and wick away moisture.
