DRO AA/FC Challenge 2017 News and Notes

The opening of the 2017 DRO AA/FC Challenge series at San Antonio Raceway is just about six weeks away. Two veteran F/C racers will return to the driver’s seat for this season: Vic Tiffin and Larry Gould.

 

Tiffin was an outstanding Alky Funny car racer in the late '70s and early '80s in the old NHRA Division 3 "Pro Am" funny car circuit where Dale Armstrong, Ken Veney, and Frank Hawley raced. He told the Agent that the car is almost complete and he is trying to make it to the opener at San Antonio May 19-20.

 

Larry Gould told the Agent that he already reserved room and bought airline tickets for the crew and will bring his '79 Ford 427 Ford Cammer-powered Ford EXP to San Antonio and race it for the first time.

 

DRO series veteran Fred Farndon will also be debuting his new Nostalgia Funny Car at that event. Be there! [04/11/17]

Blue skies for Gray at ADRL opener in Rockingham

Jonathan Gray was in the driver’s seat at the ADRL season opener at Rockingham Dragway while Rickie Smith is recovering from back surgery.

 

The ADRL’s NHRA Pro Mod class title, contested at the quarter-mile distance, fell to second generation pro Jonathan Gray of Artesia, NM, after No. 1 qualifier Matt Smith of King, NC, son of many-time NHRA and IHRA champion Rickie Smith and driving a second team Camaro, was upset in the semifinals by veteran Doug Winters.

 

Gray’s win capped an amazing four weeks for Gray Motorsports in which the Carolina-based team won the NHRA Gatornationals Pro Stock championship on March 19 with Jonathan’s brother, Shane, at the wheel of a Camaro and then won last week’s NHRA race at Las Vegas with Shane’s 17-year-old son Tanner getting his first rookie season win.

Sydney Jamboree now in the books

With almost the entire month of March being extremely wet across New South Wales, the postponed Sydney Jamboree finally went into the books last Saturday. The big winner was Paul Mahouyet, who drove the once "World’s Fastest full bodied sedan" to a Pro Mod win.

Miocevich jet dragster crashes in Perth

Second generation racer Daniel Miocevich was lucky to survive a 275-mph jet dragster crash at the Perth Motorplex in Western Australia over the weekend. Daniel is the son of Motorplex track builder and promoter, the late Gary Miocevich, who died two years ago.

 

Being interviewed on Channel 7 TV he said, “The car was pulling hard on a really good pass and coming up to the finish line it just made a massive turn to the right. I got out of the car as quickly as I could and told safety guys to radio that I was OK as I was worried what my family and everyone on the start-line would think.”

 

It was Miocevich’s birthday and he added, ”A lot of people have said that it was my dad watching out for me”.

 

The cause of the crash isn’t known yet, but Miocevich thinks it was a mechanical failure. [04/11/17]

ManCup season begins at SGMP

At last weekend's ManCup season-opening event at South Georgia Motorsports Park, in the Top Fuel final, Larry "Spiderman" McBride defeated a red-lighting Sam Wills. McBride earlier ran low ET of the event at 5.91.  Dave Vantine had top speed at 239.10 mph.

Rodney Williford ran an amazing 226.70 mph in Pro Street in the semifinals. Unfortunately, he fouled in the process. He was number one qualifier (and low ET) at 6.713. (Marvin T. Smith photos)

Engine Masters Challenge set for October

The Amsoil Engine Masters Challenge Presented by Hot Rod is an elite engine building competition that combines all aspects of engine building and has become the world's largest dyno racing event ever. This is the 16th year of the Engine Masters Challenge, and will take place Oct. 2-6 at the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH).

 

There are three classes of competition, each with their own rules and specific requirements. Vortech Superchargers has been named the exclusive supercharger manufacturer of the 2017 Engine Masters Challenge, and the Vortech V-7 YSi-B centrifugal supercharger will be featured on every engine in the Spec Blower Shootout Class.

 

The competition level should be extremely high, with engine builders in the class able to select from the GM LS, Ford Modular, and Gen. 3 Chrysler HEMI engines. The other two competing engine classes are the Vintage Class and Traditional Muscle Class, both of which will feature naturally aspirated engines, and each having their own specific rules and requirements.
