Jacobsmeyer wins at Martin, Michigan

Missouri racer Greg “Jake” Jacobsmeyer was the winner of the 14th annual Funny Car Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Jake and the team’s lifetime ET and speed records fell and new ones were set, visiting winner’s circle for the second time this season. With six cars in the class, the format offered a modified “Chicago Style” road to the finals where the cars with the two lowest ET’s from each qualification round go head to head in the final round on Saturday night to determine the event winner.

Jacobsmeyer’s Allstar Dodge Challenger made a second-round run of 5.76 seconds at 250.78 mph. That run got him into the final round by a mere 0.002 seconds. In the final Jacobsmeyer met Paul Romine where Romine’s “Man O’ War” Mustang lost traction and Jacobsmeyer went on to the win in 5.81 seconds at 249.31 mph.

Romine goes 260 mph in AA/FC

Paul Romine drove the “Man O’ War” Mustang to a tire-spinning 6.276/260.87 in a run against Ronny Young in the “Blue Max” AA/FC at the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park event.

Romine joins other DRO champions John Hale and Shawn Bowen in recording a 260+ speed in an AA/FC. Romine and Bowen aren't in the “LOD 260 club” as they didn't record those speeds at an NHRA Heritage event but Hale is in the club since he got his speed at a Heritage event. The “Man O’ War” wasn't NHRA-legal but was in match race trim for this booked-in show.

Grimes grabs Tierp title

Stateside interest at the Dico Scandinavian Internationals at Tierp, Sweden, came in the form of Tommy Grimes Jr. on board Per Bengtsson’s fearsome blown parallel Super Twin.

Bouncing back after a frame-rail bending explosion in Finland via an event win in Norway, the North Carolinian wrapped up the EDRS Pro Super Twin title in fine style, qualifying low with a 6.3113, before running a very impressive 6.291/216 at the semi-final stage to set the class ET record. Grimes appeared to be on a charge to another low 6-second clocking in the final but the aptly named ‘Beast’ shed the chain just as Grimes was getting alongside Denmark’s Marcus Christiansen.

Is 400 the lucky number for Jeg Coughlin?

The timing is right for Jeg Coughlin Jr. to begin his quest for a seventh NHRA national championship and sixth Pro Stock title at this weekend's 10th annual NHRA Carolina Nationals at zMax Dragway near Charlotte. The 76-time national event winner will be entering his 400th Pro Stock race this weekend, a mark eclipsed by just two other active drivers -- Greg Anderson and Allen Johnson.

"We've been fortunate to win this deal three times since they instilled the playoff system,” Coughlin said. “We've started at the front and come up empty and we've also started from the front and a few rows back and won it all, so we know anything can happen. It's all about how your team performs from Charlotte forward."

Coughlin and his JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro are ranked seventh on this year's playoff grid, placing him just 70 points off the lead. The points are reset at the end of the regular season, with each participant 1-10 separated by 10 points.

"We had another extensive test session after Indy and we brought in a few extra people to see if some fresh eyes might see something we may have been overlooking. It went extremely well and we did make some changes that showed some real results as far as the data goes so we'll work from this new platform in Charlotte weekend.”

His brothers Troy and Mike will be driving in Pro Mod and Top Dragster respectively. Nephew Troy Jr. will be running in Super Comp, having left the seat of the SealMaster Top Fuel dragster.

Brittany hopes for repeat win at Charlotte

Although John Force Racing has won 18 championships in Funny Car, Brittany Force is still looking for a Top Fuel title.

The hunt for the Top Fuel title begins in the NHRA Carolina Nationals this weekend at zMAX Dragway, where the first round of the Countdown to the Championship will be held.

Force sits sixth in the Top Fuel standings, and after the points were reset for the six-race Countdown, she’s only 60 points – or three rounds – out of first.

Force has one victory this season. In the last 11 races, she’s won at least one round 10 times, advancing to the semifinals five times and winning in Epping, NH. Force is also a past Charlotte winner, going to the winner’s circle in the Four-Wide Nationals last April.

“Knowing that we won the Four-Wide there, it sets your mind at ease a little bit for everyone on the team,” Force said. “Knowing that we did it before – yes, it was Four-Wide – but we’ve taken down that track, it’s our plan to do it again.”

Cook named Race Director of WMPMS

The Mid-West Pro Mod Series, based in Tulsa, OK, has named David “Cookie” Cook as its new race director. Cook also will oversee all track preparation efforts for the growing eighth-mile drag racing organization that typically appears as a supplemental draw for each host track’s regularly scheduled special events.

Cook, an experienced track prep specialist for Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park (TRP) and an NHRA-certified tech inspector, previously held a similar position with the American Drag Racing League and Professional Drag Racers Association. He also travels annually to the Middle East to fill a similar role during the winter drag racing season in Qatar.

“This is the first time he’s officially taking on the race director’s job, but I have a hundred-percent confidence that his knowledge and abilities are going to make him an equally great race director,” Mid-West Pro Mod Series founder and TRP co-owner Keith Haney stated. “So, all race-day decisions for the Mid-West Pro Mod Series will be made by David Cook; tech will be run by David Cook; any rule disputes will be settled by David Cook.

“I’m just another racer when I’m at the track,” stressed Haney, who also competes in the series with his nitrous-injected 2014 Camaro. “As far as the Mid-West Pro Mod Series is concerned, whatever David Cook says, goes.”

Cook will tackle his new job for the first time Sept. 22-23, when the Mid-West Pro Mod Series competes in Texas at San Antonio Raceway, and then Oct. 13-14 at Tulsa Raceway Park.
