And the ’56 Ford mentioned above of Angelo Sanchez:
This is our glimpse of the highlights of a very well-run drag race in New Mexico, the quality and quantity of cars in competition would be the envy of Fontana, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Tucson; they were just that good. We were made to feel welcome by Lyle Greenberg, Jim Riedel, Rich Stringer and the entire staff at Albuquerque Dragway – in fact we were just blown away…
Heading into the High Dollar brackets, found Super Pro going to another El Paso car, Danny Dean driving a MOPAR Dodge. His winning time was 9.48 secs. @ 142.81 mph.
The noteworthy runner up in Super Pro was the immaculate 1956 Ford driven by Angel Sanchez from Albuquerque. This car looks like a ‘show room’ model from outside. Behind the doors is a full tube chassis, wheel tubs, etc. it is very nice.
Pro bracket went to Mike Perea driving a ’79 Mustang over the NOVANATOR with Manuel Blea at the controls. Perea’s winning numbers were: 10.05 @ 131.96 at the 8,000ft. corrected altitude.
The highly contested Sportsman Eliminator went to the ‘ALL OUT CALL OUT’ Chevy Nova driven by Cole Baca who is a regular racer at ABQ.
Our unofficial winner of ‘Best Appearing Car is a tie between Ellie Collins’ Corvette:
FEATURES
The FIRECRACKER NATIONALS at Albuquerque Dragway in New Mexico featured the WFA (Western Fuel Altereds) along with ‘Outlaw Door Slammers’; AA/FC Funny Cars; Big $$$ Brackets; and Jets! The stands were full; the pits were stuffed; and the food was inexpensive! What more could any drag racer want?
Shown above is the winning Fuel Altered ‘Carbon Copy’ driven by Gregg Holman from the Phoenix, Arizona area. Gregg topped a quality field which included the previous two WFA Champions, Sheldon Lofgreen and Mitch Bowen.
The co-feature of the event was the ‘Outlaw Door Slammers’ with both supercharged and Nitrous-equipped engines. (Most of us would call them Pro Mods.)
Though not the quickest car in the field, the winner was the beautiful blue Corvette driven by Arthur Cordova from Ben’s Automotive. Art clicked off three runs during eliminations with the best reaction times of the night to win going away.
The low E.T. car was the ‘soul shaking’ ’57 Chevy of Lyle Byrum from El Paso who had the entire field covered by half a second. Alas, a header broke on the burnout for Round 1 and the quick car was finished for the night. But that is drag racing.
A very high quality AA/FC from El Paso, Texas, won the Funny Car Match Race. ‘Blown Cent-Less’ was the catchy name for the car driven by Ray Stout.
