Terry Chandler’s husband will continue funding two DSR Funny Cars

The late Terry Chandler's dream of having a "giving car" in the NHRA Funny Car category will continue through 2020 after her husband, Doug Chandler, agreed to continue her mission and fund two Funny Cars with Don Schumacher Racing. Terry lost her battle with brain cancer on July 4.

The Dodge Charger R/T Funny Cars will continue to be driven by Tommy Johnson Jr. and Jack Beckman in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and will continue to benefit worthwhile non-profit organizations. Since Terry began funding the teams in 2014, they have donated branding space to the Make-A-Wish and Infinite Hero foundations.

"Terry loved her teams and I saw how much she looked forward to going to the races and help the children of Make-A-Wish and our soldier heroes who gave more than anyone could have asked and were helped by Infinite Hero when they came home," said Doug, who was married to Terry for 49 years.

"Terry lives on in so many people's hearts and mine. I don't want to see her dream end."

Boyer takes Harley win as Turner has mechanical problems

Canadian Top Fuel Harley racer Kevin Boyer (far lane) of Edmonton, A.B., came down to Seattle and pulled off the mild upset at the Northwest Nationals after defending World Champion Jay Turner, Julian, N.C., broke shortly after launch. Boyer had his share of mechanical issue as well but was able to surpass Turner for the victory, crossing the finish line at 7.788 seconds, 150.46 mph while Turner limped in at 15.485/76.88.

We’ll have a complete look at the Seattle Nitro Harley competition in tomorrow’s new DRO.

By the Numbers: NHRA live on FOX

The NHRA Northwest Nationals got live coverage on the big FOX network Sunday, Aug. 6. That saw a rise in viewers to 883,000 and a rating of 0.55.

The week before at Sonoma, there were 363,000 viewers on FS1 and a 0.28 rating.

Rocky Mountain Superchargers double up at SRCA

Tom and Daniel Butherus.

The Rocky Mountain Superchargers rolled into the Summer Nationals at Kansas International Dragway and laid down some markers in the first round of their return to the Midwest track. Then, the rain came. A lot of rain. According to the organization's rules, the outcome for the Pro Supercharged/All Stars was to be decided at SRCA Dragstrip during the next scheduled event.

Decided it was. The Wichita-based "Rude Rat" team of Tom and Daniel Butherus scored the Kansas International win during a special qualifying round pairing with Nebraskan Matt Nissen. The SRCA race unfolded from there with Nissen taking the final over Reminiscin' Racing's Woody O'Connell in a contest of front engine dragsters.

The quicker Top Supercharged Thunder group saw a 6.60 pass at 211 MPH from Tony Arcuri's "Firefighter" funny car to lead off the qualifying. In the final, though, it was 2016 Champion Tom Furches' "Made in America" Firebird funny car flying across the stripe just inches ahead of Morrison Colorado's Dan Smith, though Furches slowed to an uncharacteristic 7.14 because of

traction problems.

Also at stake during the SRCA meet were the Richmond Gear Race Night and the conclusion of the series within a series known as the Competition Products Challenge. Points awarded in the three-race trifecta saw Furches and Nissen capture those prizes as well.

The Superchargers will be at Yellowstone Dragstrip on Saturday, Aug. 19.

SHRA at Paris (Texas, that is)

The second attempt for the Southwest Heritage Racing Association to appear at Paris Drag Strip was successful after a rainout a month earlier.

Coming into Paris, Andy Mears in the “Dragon Slayer” Chevy was leading the NE1 class by only one point. The 10-car field at Paris saw Tera Graves take the semifinal win over Mears while Tommy Drozd got a semifinal bye. In the final Tera got off the line first, but Drozd’s altered had just enough horsepower to catch her with a 4.682 to her 4.710.

The NE2 final was a real squeaker with Gary Wheeler Jr’s .036 light and 5.065 run nipping Bruce Dodson’s .041 light and 5.062 run. Wheeler maintains his points lead with Dodson moving up to number 2.

Dustin Bradford got the NE3 win when Jacob Reeves was not able to make the final-round call.

Vic Corlett won Nostalgia Super Stock and took the class points lead. Michael Graves won Old School No Electronics and now leads the points while Dean Johnson maintains his Old School Electronics lead although Jason Bolton won the race at Paris.

Next on the schedule is the Old School Bracket Nationals on Aug. 19 at Northstar Dragway in Denton, TX.

‘Truck Mania’ set for Memphis in October

On Saturday, Oct. 14, Truck Mania will bring together the best race and show vehicles at MIR for a full day of truck and off-road activities. Drag racing for many classes will be a part of the action.

DRO AA/FC Challenge downsized at US 131

After many of the DRO series teams are unable to make this weekend’s DRO AA/FC Challenge at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, MI, there will be a change. No championship points will be awarded but two of the series superstars will instead match race at the Northern Nationals.

Paul Romine (shown), who has won the first two DRO events of the season, will take on John Hale in the “One Bad Texan”.

“I hated to do this,” said Series Administrator Jeff Burk, “but three or four of our regular teams will not be able to make this race and without six cars it just isn't a race."

Anthony Bronge and his team are still repairing the “Iowa Punisher” after a crash a little over a week ago. Fred Farndon’s “Play it Loud Again” team and Ronny Young’s “Blue Max” will be short of crewmembers. Driver of the “down-Under thunder”, series regular Bazz Young has a business trip. Richard Hartman was planning on bringing “Runnin’ Wild VI” for the first time this year, but the team is dealing with some health issues.

The series will run at (hopefully) full strength at US 131 on Sept. 8-9.

Racers head for Boise’s Nightfire Nationals

An eight-car field of front-engine Top Fuel dragsters are motoring towards Firebird Raceway  in Boise, Idaho, to battle at the Pepsi Nightfire Nationals, the third meet in the five-race 2017 NHRA Hot Rod Heritage Top Fuel points series. Assembled drivers and teams will join the largest gathering of nitro-burning cars in Nightfire Nationals' event history for three days of qualifying and heads-up eliminations under the lights on Aug. 11-13 in celebration of the 50th year of drag racing action at Firebird Raceway.

Eight AA/Fuel Dragsters, 10 AA/Fuel Altereds, and 18 nitro-burning AA/Funny Cars add up to 38 nitromethane-huffing entries for under-the-lights header flames action. Fifteen Pro Modified doorslammers, two jet dragsters, two jet funny cars and the crowd favorite “Candyland Stagecoach” wheelstander are on deck to add that much more fire to the Nightfire Nationals with wildcard late entries a distinct possibility.

Bowling Green NHRA National Hot Rod Reunion event winner and current points leader Jim Murphy is wheeling the Roland Leong-tuned “WW2” Hemi-powered dragster with renewed consistency into the Boise battle after a March Meet defeat at the hands of second place points holder Mendy Fry and the High Speed Motorsports team. Reigning AA/FD Top Fuel champion and three-time Nightfire Nationals event winner Tony Bartone and the Bartone Brothers are hauling in from the east coast for a hit at four event victories and a climb from current number three points slot.

Southern California based driver Adam Sorokin and the Champion Speed Shop out of South San Francisco have plans to extract a little more time and keep the fire inside the small-block Chevrolet powered dragster out on the top end of the 1320.

"We have been doing a little work with our supercharger set up as well as other things. We're just trying to get the car to last one more second", said Sorokin who is currently locked into a fourth place points tie with Top Fuel hot shoe Dusty Green who will connect with the “Nitro Hemi” (shown) in Boise as it makes its way in from Colorado.

Other AA/Fuel Dragsters include Bret Williamson in Mike Fuller’s “Forever Young, Tyler Hilton in “Great Expectations III” and Phil Ruskowski in “Mighty Mouse.”

Scruggs steps away from racing, but not from PDRA ownership

As co-owner of the PDRA, Jason Scruggs has been in staunch support of the organization from day one, never missing a race in his Pro Extreme “Mississippi Missile”. And while he is maintaining his partial ownership, the upcoming PDRA Summer Nationals will look a little different as Scruggs announces he is taking some time off from racing.

Scruggs will park the “Mississippi Missile” for the immediate future to focus on family and business, but this is in no way a final decision on his racing career.

“I have a whole lot going on with business and my family right now and just going to take a break from racing for a while,” Scruggs explained. “I’m still behind the PDRA one hundred percent. I want to clear the air and don’t want any rumors to start flying about PDRA.

“My girls are getting older and we have some other family stuff going on. Racing requires a whole lot of time to get the car ready in between races. Even though I won’t be traveling to events, I still stand behind the PDRA.”

“We’re working diligently on the 2018 schedule,” said PDRA’s Bob Harris. “It’s almost complete and should be announced in the next couple of weeks.”
