Forecast won’t stop PDRA at Tulsa this week

Tommy Franklin

This weekend marks the return of the Professional Drag Racers Association to Osage Casino Tulsa Raceway Park for the PDRA Summer Nationals, Aug. 10-12. Despite challenging weather forecasts for the weekend, the all-eighth-mile series and its teams will move forward with the sixth of eight races on the 2017 PDRA Tour.

“It’s not just Tulsa being affected by these storms,” said PDRA race director Bob Harris. “It looks like the whole eastern U.S. is getting hit with these thunderstorms. We just feel like we’ll work around them.

“With the exception of the tropical storm we faced at Bradenton last year, we’ve never had to postpone a race due to rain in the four-year history of the PDRA. We have Sunday to fall back on as a rain date if we need to do that. We’re flexible and we’ll do everything we can to make this race happen.”

McIntire and Lennon added to US 131 Northern Nationals

This weekend's Northern Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park has added Nostalgia Funny Car ET record holder Mike McIntire Jr. and the “McAttack” Camaro. McIntire recently recorded a 5.52/259 lap racing against Paul Romine in Canada. At that event Romine ran a personal best 5.59/258 racing against each other.

Also coming to the Michigan event will be Kevin Lennon and his "Shake and Bake" Mopar. The pair join AA/FC racers John Hale and Paul Romine.

Coughlin uncle and niece drive dragsters

Veteran drag racer Mike Coughlin and his fresh-on-the-scene niece, Paige Coughlin (shown), of Team JEGS are headed to Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis this weekend planning to find success during the Division 3 Summer Shootout double header.

Mike will have two chances to bag a Wally trophy as the first half of the double header is a continuation of the rain-delayed North Central Division's season-opener from late April. Mike was the No. 1 qualifier in Top Dragster that weekend so he'll be considered the favorite when eliminations begin.

Once the April race is concluded on Thursday, racers in all classes -- including rookie Paige Coughlin in Super Comp -- will begin to qualify for the originally scheduled Summer Shootout beginning Friday. Qualifying will continue Saturday morning followed by eliminations.

"We had a great first race last weekend," Paige said. "My JEGS.com Super Comp dragster was named 'Best Engineered Car' and I was able to go three rounds on race day. Considering that was my Sportsman debut, I was super happy.

"I learned a lot but I know I have so much more to go. I'm excited to race with my Uncle Mike again this weekend and get some more laps. I know one thing for sure, this smile on my face isn't going anywhere any time soon."
