Phillips ends Lucas sponsorship the way it began: with a win

Racing in front of a track record crowd, Lucas Oil's Gary Phillips claimed victory at Darwin's Hidden Valley Drag Strip for the second consecutive year in his 1953 Studebaker Pro Slammer.

Phillips qualified in the No. 2 position with an off the trailer 5.721 at 251.91 mph, which also doubled as a personal best elapsed time for the 47-year drag racing veteran, with 20 Australian Championships to his credit.

After using the second qualifying session to test some ideas, which resulted in a personal best sixty-foot time of .969 seconds, the Lucas Oil team would return to their recently found 5.70-second tune up for the remainder of eliminations.

Phillips proved that consistently quick runs are a winning combination and used a 5.77, 5.78 and 5.77 to eliminate his three competitors and once again claim the title of Nitro Up North event winner.

Using the event as a platform to thank departing sponsor Lucas Oil after 20 years of support, the team was thrilled to take home the victory in the final event in Lucas colors.

"We couldn't have thought of a better way to finish up our 20-year partnership,” Phillips said. “We won the first event with Lucas Oil on our car back in 1997, and also won the final one in 2017.”

Phillips is currently looking for sponsors for his two cars.

New Product of the Day

Hedman Hedders has announced its new Long Tube Exhaust Headers supporting the swap of most Chevrolet [Gen 1] small block engines (including aluminum angle plug heads/L98) into the 1982 to 2004 Chevy S-10 and GMC S-15. Unlike many other long tube S10 swap headers, this new model has a one-piece, in-frame design, making them easier to install. These headers provide higher performance than cast manifolds or short tube headers, and they are constructed using durable 16-gauge mild steel primary tubes, stout 3/8” flanges, and employ Hedman’s popular ball/socket style collector that uses no gasket. Hedman offers these headers uncoated, as well as, polished silver (HTC) and satin black (Black Maxx) ceramic-metallic coated to complement your personal style. These S10 V8 swap headers include head flange bolts & gasket, collector bolts and a collector-to-exhaust adapter. As with all Hedman Hedders, these long tube S-Series truck headers are made in the USA, and are backed by Hedman’s Limited Lifetime warranty. Hedman’s factory applied coatings are covered for a full 5 years.

Coughlin sees improved performance momentum for Seattle

Looking for his first win since 2014 and wanting to grab some momentum heading into the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, Jeg Coughlin Jr. is heading into this weekend’s NHRA Northwest Nationals at scenic Pacific Raceways with new determination. Things haven’t gone totally as planned this year in his JEGS.com/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro, but Coughlin remains confident as ever he can return to his winning ways and compete for a sixth Pro Stock world championship.

With five world championships and 58 wins to his credit, the Pro Stock veteran has been close to a win during the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season, advancing to two finals, but the longtime standout is determined to break through.

"It feels like we finally shifted our gears last weekend in Sonoma and I think we're back on the right track,” Coughlin said. “No question we've had a bit of a lull in our performances the last handful of races but this is still a car that has raced to the final round a few times this year and been on the pole at three events. I know it may not look like it from the cloud looking down but from inside the ropes I feel like we’re getting a little bit of our stride back. We picked up some momentum with a nice round win in Sonoma and we're ready to stay on the positive side of things."
