Defending Lucas Oil World Champion Joey Severance and Jimmy DeFrank took home Wally trophies from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Northwest Division Les Schwab Tires Challenge at Woodburn Dragstrip.
In Top Alcohol Dragster final round, Severance, Woodburn, Ore., continued his championship defense against TAD rival Shawn Cowie, B.C. Severance got off the line first and continued to pull away for the win. Severance registered a winning pass of 5.227 seconds, 278.89 mph. Cowie followed up at 5.260 seconds, 278.29 mph.
Cowie from Surrey, BC, Canada, recorded the quickest Elapsed Time and fastest speed ever for a blown Top Alcohol Dragster. His record ET 5.165 and 280.54 MPH took place during Round 1 of Eliminations. Cowie is the first blown Top Alcohol Dragster driver to record a speed of 280 mph for a blown alcohol combination.
Jimmy DeFrank, Thousand Oaks, Calif., continued his world title defense as well in the final round of Super Stock. And it was an easy day at the office as Dave Barcelon, Bremerton, Wash., triggered the red light yielding the victory to DeFrank. DeFrank made a winning pass of 9.293 seconds, 115.47 mph.
Nick Januik (far lane) was the first to fall to Greg Hunter.
Top Alcohol Funny Car standout Doug Gordon, Paso Robles, Calif., lined up at the starting line to battle against Greg Hunter, Castle Rock, Colo. Hunter got a small 0.010 seconds starting line advantage at the green and stayed with Gordon all the way down the track to taking the narrow holeshot win by just 0.004 seconds, for the win. Hunter finished first at 5.536 seconds, 271.65 mph. Gordon clocked in at 5.532 seconds, 269.38 mph.
Greg Hunter was driving Annie Whiteley’s car this weekend.
Local racer Casey Depeel, Portland, Ore., made his final round debut in the Rig Rental Top Dragster finale. And he made the most of it, as he narrowly defeated Francesca Giroux, Slave Lake, Alb., in a double breakout. Depeel took home the event Wally trophy, registering the win at 7.216 seconds, 179.35 mph. Giroux runner upped at 6.436 seconds, 214.79 mph.
The JBS Top Sportsman final round showcased a battle of Northern versus Southern California, Richard Okerman, of Torrance had an easy path to victory, 7.036 seconds, 196.97 mph as Ted Kellner of San Jose fouled at the line.
Dan Patridge, Kennewick, Wash., spoiled local racer’s Mark Adams’, Portland, final round debut in Sportsman Motorcycle. Partridge grabbed a big lead off the starting line and Adams broke attempting to hold him off. Patridge took home the victory at 8.014 seconds, 160.08 mph, Adams 9.260 seconds, 138.63 mph.
The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series is scheduled to visit the Northwest Division next on August 18 at Pacific Raceways, Kent, Wash.
