Russ Behrens
Rosie Kossuth moved on with a nice 10.03 on her 10.00 Index over the wheel-standing Hemi Cuda of Jay Freihage. Jerry Bolton showed three-time Champion Russ Berens that his first-round reaction time was no fluke with another great .011 light.
Rosie Kossuth
After a quick cool down, the Victory racers returned for Round 3. Shaun Johnston coupled a .05 light with a 11.02 on his 11.00 Index to defeat Rosie Kossuth. BJ Bax continued on when Westhoff turned on the dreaded red light by .001 of a second. Jerry Bolton’s string of great lights continued with a .028 and win over Hoffman. Randy Spurgeon made good use of his bye run, running his Wedge-powered 1965 Plymouth out the back door with a 10.47 on his 10.50 Index.
With the stands filled to capacity, the Super Stocks returned for the semi-finals. Bax got a ticket to the finals when Bolton pushed the tree too hard and turned on the red light. The Spurgeon/Johnston duel was an all-out slugfest.
Spurgeon left with an incredible .002 Reaction Time, forcing Johnston to break out with a 10.991 on his 11.00 Index trying to catch him.
The finals were set, the Pontiac of Bax against the Plymouth of Spurgeon. Bax has raced his GTO for years and has been very successful lately with it. Spurgeon pulled to the line on a mission but Bax wasn’t going to go down easy. Bax got the handicap start and started his march down the track. Spurgeon left almost immediately on the green light with a .019 Reaction. Both cars charged hard down the track and when the boards lit up, Spurgeon’s win light came on as Bax broke out with a 11.249 on his 11.25 Index!
Spurgeon enjoyed the Winners Circle celebration with a large crowd of Victory NSS racers and fans. He was also proud, because he knew that his hero Arlen was smiling down on him.
The Victory Racers return to action Aug. 4-5 at the Street Car Super Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park. They will make qualifying runs on Friday evening and will run Eliminations Saturday afternoon and evening.

Randy Spurgeon (near lane) got the semifinal win over Shaun Johnston.
The third race of the Victory NSS Points Series took place at the Cedar Falls Motorsports Park Night of Fire event on July 15-16. The Victory racers were greeted with beautiful weather on Friday evening. After three rounds of wheelstanding action from the classic Super Stocks, 2016 Series Champion Tom Hoffman showed his Championship form, qualifying #1 with a perfect 10.75 on his 10.75 Index.
Saturday brought bright sunshine and a return to the scorching Midwest heat that had been the norm for the last couple of weeks. The heat did not deter the spirit of the Victory racers or the excited Cedar Falls fans that turned out in large numbers for this great event. The Victory cars started the Saturday evening show with their first Round of Eliminations.
Jim Hagenhoff
Notable first round winners included Iowa’s own Jerry Bolton with an incredible .003 RT win over the tough Barracuda of Bruce Lang. Bob Lantero moved on when Jim Hagenhoff wisely shut off his Hemi Belvedere after its burnout when it didn’t sound right. Bob Westhoff and his big Ford used a nice .041 light to defeat the Pontiac driven by Jeff Roberts.
Dennis’s brother Randy moved on with a win over fellow Missouri racer Carl Nappier. Rosie Kossuth was victorious courtesy of a tough .001 red light by Jim Kroeger.
The Victory Super Stocks returned for Round 2 and the action continued where they had left off. Randy Spurgeon continued on with a win over Dalton Bruemmer. Hoffman looked strong with a solid run defeating Bob Lantero. BJ Bax and his GTO have had a great start to the year and this didn’t change with a victory over the red lighting Randy Van Hook.
Think Bob Lister likes GTO’s?
Shaun Johnston’s fantastic .017 reaction was too much for Mike Volkart and his yellow Chevelle to overcome. Bob Westhoff won the all-Ford battle with Dick Monaco.
