Chevrolet Challenge winners at Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing

For the first time ever, Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series drivers joined hundreds of NMRA and NMCA drivers competing as part of the Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing presented by Fuel Systems Technology. This year's event on July 27-29 at Route 66 Raceway in Illinois welcomed beautiful weather and intense, quarter-mile drag racing from some of the finest LS- and LT-powered machines anywhere.

Reigning Chevrolet Performance Stock presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center champion Jesse Wilson wheeled to a 10.11 to lead qualifying in the category, and he made it all the way to the final, where he slowed to a 10.21, but it was enough to take the win over Scott Brown, who turned in a 10.54 in his first final-round appearance.

Jenna Wilson wound up with a 9.75 on a 9.75 in her Camaro to lead LME Street King qualifying, but in the end, multi-time winner Al Corda collected the win with a 10.09 on a 10.00 index in his Camaro over Steve Griswold, who turned on the red in his Corvette.

Kevin Rowand

David Rickey rocketed to an 11.00 on an 11.00 in his Camaro to lead Proform Rumble qualifying, and while he made it all the way to the final, Kevin Rowand rode to the win in his Corvette with an 11.18 on an 11.00 index over Rickey’s 11.29 on an 11.00 index.

In the Chevrolet Street Car Challenge, Stephen Chechak was the overall winner with an 8.72 average and Bill Schwarz was the runner-up with a 9.93 average. George Messer was the 10-second winner, Kevin Rowand was the 11-second winner, Krystal Glidic was the 12-second winner and Justin Schwarz rounded out the category as the 13-second winner.

There are two events left in this year's Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series, including stops at the 17th Annual Honeywell Garrett NMCA All-American Nationals, Aug. 23-26 at Summit Motorsports Park in Ohio, and one at the Holley Fest, Sept. 7-9 at Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky.

Race car builder defends use of off-shore suppliers in Guest Editorial

The Made in America discussions are part of the national news these days because of the rash of new tariffs. While many aftermarket products are sourced offshore simply because of cost, other critical components are manufactured offshore because the capacity to produce these products domestically doesn't exist.

Joe Whitaker, one of the owners of Real Deal Steel, explains why his company (and probably many others) uses high-quality offshore manufacturers to produce the steel for the '55-'57 Chevy, first-gen Camaro and '66-'67 Chevy II Nova bodies that they assemble and sell in a Guest Editorial.

Barlow resets A/MD record in Australia

Australian Modified race Simon Barlow reset both the ET and MPH records on his way to a final-round appearance in the Desert Nationals at Alice Springs Inland Dragway, round two of the 18/19 Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series. The A/MD (Top Dragster) records now stand at 6.87 second and 197.89 mph.

“The last time we raced in Alice Springs was in 2015 when we were lucky enough to come away with a win,” Barlow said. “We were hoping for a repeat and we gave it our best shot but could only manage to snare the runner up result. Our congratulations go to Adam Mundy in his dragster on his first Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series win.”

Barlow will next race Sept. 22-23 at the Sunset Strip Nationals held at Mildura.

MWPMS Ready to Rock St. Louis for Second Time this Season

“Notorious” will be the only car Haney races the rest of the season.

With just three events left on its 2018 schedule, the all-eighth-mile Frankenstein Engine Dynamics Mid-West Pro Mod Series (MWPMS) is returning to Gateway Motorsports Park this weekend (Aug. 2-4), as part of promoter Mel Roth’s fifth annual Street Car Super Nationals. The MWPMS previously visited the track near St. Louis in May to close out the first half of its eight-race season.

“Unfortunately, last-minute business demands prevented me from attending our first race in St. Louis this year, but I’m looking forward to kicking some butt this time around,” MWPMS owner, promoter and competitor Keith Haney said. “I just announced that I’m selling both of my race cars, though, so I’ll only be racing ‘Notorious’ in Pro Mod with the Mid-West series the rest of this year.

After an afternoon of open testing at Gateway Motorsports Park, beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, round one of qualifying for the PSCA Street Car Super Nationals V, including all Mid-West Pro Mod Series classes, will begin at 9 p.m. Spectator gates open at 3 p.m. Friday, with round two of qualifying scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and round three starting at 10:30 p.m. so that all on-track activity can be wrapped up by midnight.

Harley announces electric motorcycle to expand market

Facing dwindling sales in its home market, Harley-Davison said Monday that it will roll out some new products and stores to broaden its audience and invigorate sales.

Harley, known for its distinctive engine rumble, will roll out an electric motorcycle called LiveWire next year, with no clutch and no gears. It's promising to expand that line over the next few years.

With sales rising in Asia and India, Harley-Davidson says it's developing smaller bikes with 250 to 500 cubic centimeter engines, to make them more accessible.

Thankfully, the company will continue manufacturing its big bikes.

At just 4.6 pounds, the ZP Base Model, the “Pro Fab” is a bare-bones, no-frills, retrofit column for drag racing and competition applications that has been stripped of turn signals, tilt system and anything else that might add weight or get in the way of getting down the track. Meanwhile, the ZP “Pro-Lite” is a top-tier, lightweight column that retains all the safety features of a standard steering column to blend function with performance. Coming in at less than 6 pounds, it nonetheless provides all the creature comforts needed for an enjoyable drive with features including self-canceling turn signals, four-way flashers, horn wiring, 3-7/8" wiring plug and a 1" 48 lower shaft. It also collapses a full 5 inches for enhanced driver safety. ZP Performance Steering will also add the “Pro Prep” performance steering column to its lineup, bringing the safety of collapsibility to the sleek design of the ZP “Pro Fab” retrofit race column.
