Five more teams qualify for HROT Engine Challenge

In first place was team Custom Automotive Network (CAN), Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center from Choctaw, OK, with the blistering time of 19 minutes 36 seconds.

The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge’s fourth event of the season was held at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, TX, on March 24.

A total of seven schools from Texas and Oklahoma fielding nine teams competed, with five teams making the cut and getting a chance to win thousands of dollars in college scholarships at the 2018 Dual National Championship Playoffs coming up in November and December at the SEMA Show and PRI Show respectively.

To qualify for the Dual National Championship, a team must finish disassembling and reassembling a small-block Chevrolet engine in less than 33 minutes, including penalties.

Hereford High School out of Hereford, TX, had two teams participate and both qualified. In second place came team Proform, with the time of 27:40 and fourth place Team Vibrant Performance with 30:46. The third-place team was Comp Cams, Pontotoc Tech Center from Ada, TX, with a 29:14 time. The fifth-place qualifier was a first-time participant, Team PRW, J. W. Nixon High School from Laredo, TX, with the time of 32:05.

Bishop temporarily steps away after winning Australian Jr. Dragster title

In his final year racing in the Summit Racing Equipment Junior Dragster bracket, 17-year-old Bradley Bishop was able to secure the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series Australian title.

“While the title might say we were the best of the season, I don’t see myself as any better than anyone else,” he said, “anything can happen when it comes to racing and luck plays a huge side to it – I guess when it is your time, it is your time and I am very grateful for the outcome.

“I know my sponsor -- dad’s wallet -- was certainly happy with the result. It made everything he has done for me worth it!” laughed Bishop.

He will be heading to university but plans to keep his hand in drag racing by joining the Berias family at some events as a crew member on Jake Berias’ Jr. Dragster.

But don’t think this is the end of his racing career. “It may be a few years before we are back giving it another crack in another bracket. I can say for sure, though, that we will definitely be back!”

Al Unser Sr.

One of the most iconic families in the history of auto racing will be honored with a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum presents "The Amazing Unsers: From Albuquerque to Indianapolis," opening Monday, April 9.

Twenty-five cars that the Unser family drove in competition will be on display, including eight of the nine that took them to victory in the Indianapolis 500, starting with the Rislone Eagle that powered Bobby Unser to victory 50 years ago this May.

In addition to several of the IndyCars made famous by the Unsers, many incredible machines representing their career in USAC, road racing and NASCAR will be on display, some for the first time. Visitors will also see rare memorabilia from the drivers, and can take an audio tour of some of the cars and trophies hosted by Al Unser, Al Unser Jr., Bobby Unser, Parnelli Jones and Roger Penske.

The exhibit runs through October 28. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children 6-15, with no charge for children under the age of 6. Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum members enjoy free admission.
