Ladders set for Moser Sportsman Shootout at Dallas

The NHRA South Central Division Moser Sportsman Shootout is set to take place on Saturday, April 14, with a stacked field. The specialty event is contested in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series doubleheader weekend at Texas Motorplex.

 

Slate Cummings out of Hammond, LA, captured the 2017 Moser Sportsman Shootout with a win over Christopher Dodd, and will look to defend his title as he has again qualified for the 2018 competition. To do so, Cummings will need to get past former Lucas Oil World Champion Austin Williams, Division Champions Jackson Collier, Val Harmon and Bob Gulitti and former Moser Shootout Champion Ray Dew, who once again qualified for the elusive field.

 

Through a season long point’s battle in 2017, the top two Moser Sportsman Shootout point’s earners in each of the seven classes in competition are slotted into the 16-car field while Chase Huffman and Shawn Carter will complete the ladder as the Moser Shootout Wild Card entries.

 

The Moser Sportsman Shootout is unique in that racers from seven entirely different class structures Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman will be racing each other. Eliminations will be in a dial-in/breakout handicap format on an eighth-mile.

 

A $15,000 cash purse is up for grabs with up to $5,000 going to the winner, $2,000 to the runner-up, $1,000 to each of the semifinalists, $700 to the quarter-finalists and $400 to each of the remaining event qualifiers.  [04/11/18]

NHRA and NASCAR By the Numbers

The Four-Wide format at Las Vegas seemed to generate renewed interest in the FS1 viewers. The Sunday eliminations show garnered 907,000 viewers with a 0.57 rating.

 

By comparison, the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup race on FS1 earlier in the day had 2,823,000 viewers and a 1.70 rating.  [04/11/18]

NHDRO opens season with ‘Last Man Standing’ Grudge event

The NHDRO will open the 2018 season April 13-15 at Atlanta Dragway. The 190hookup.com Last Man Standing Grudge Spectacular on Saturday night will present 16 grudge bikes in a blind-draw, winner-take-all, $13,000 battle.

 

The event is so monumental that rider Keith “Shine” Dennis and builder/tuner Joe Marasco of MSP have put aside their feud and will compete as a team for the first time in over a decade.

 

Dennis will be riding the “Venom” Suzuki GSXR1000 vs. LA on “8th Wonder” in round one. MSP also fields Derrick “Squeak” Edwards’ “Clean Getaway,” which will have Thien Le aboard vs. Desmond “Kill Bill” Spaulding on Roger Starrette’s “Heartless.” You might remember Bill and “Heartless” from a vicious crash last November at the NHDRO World Finals.

 

“Kill Bill” will also be riding “CT Fletcher” vs. Chris Moore on “Cash is King” in E1 and wouldn’t have to worry about meeting up with his “Heartless” until the final. Another two-bike rider is Lavar “Lil’ Charlie” DeLee on HTP Performance’s “Airwolf” and “Jizzle,” who race each other first round. Somebody’s got some decision makin’ to do!

 

Rodney Williford will be fresh off his PDRA Pro Extreme Motorcycle win this past weekend to return to more familiar territory—balls-out banzai passes on no-bar, turbo Hayabusas. He’ll race his “Uncle Sam” vs. Lil’ Richard Gadson on “Super Freak”—a brutal first round draw! Williford will also field the “Bad News” bike with Caleb McDougald on board vs. Shun Maxwell on “Black Panther.”

 

Rounding out the ladder are Ryan Hable on Lee Tomlinson’s “Suicide Squad” vs. Brycen Bender on “Kamikaze,” and the Midwestern pairing of Vince Hileman on “Family Man” vs. Frankie Stotz on “Biff.”

 

Eight bikes that didn’t get their entry into NHDRO in time to make the draw of 16 will race their own mini bracket as well.  [04/11/18]

Trailer exhibits move indoors for 2018 PRI Show

Indianapolis in December can sometimes be cold and snowy, and some attendees have been reluctant to spend much time outdoors to check out the trailer exhibit at the PRI Show.

 

Trailer exhibitors at the 2018 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show (www.pri2018.com) will now be able to show off their product lineups alongside their booths in the new indoor exhibit area at Lucas Oil Stadium. The new area provides exhibitors a larger space to showcase their products and is contiguous to the Indiana Convention Center.

 

"Trailers are essential in the racing industry, and moving the segment at the PRI Show indoors to the Lucas Oil Exhibit Area is part of our goal to provide the best possible venue to conduct business," said PRI Trade Show Director Karin Davidson. "The new indoor trailer exhibit area will be located at the end of the Lucas Oil Stadium corridor, on the lower level, and will give companies more space than ever before to display their products."

 

The 2018 PRI Trade Show scheduled for Dec. 6-8, will feature over 1,100 companies exhibiting in more than 3,300 booths, showcasing the latest developments in auto racing technology. Tens of thousands of buyers from all 50 states and 70 countries will be on hand in Indianapolis for the three biggest business days in racing.  [04/11/18]

LSX Shootout heads for Bowling Green with big payout

The 12th Annual Chevrolet Performance LSX Shootout is heading to the “LS Capital of the World” as NMCA officials bring the longest running LS-based national event to Beech Bend Raceway in Bowling Green, KY, over the weekend of May 17-20.

 

And to celebrate the LS and modern LT platforms, NMCA officials have over $50,000 in purse, prizes, and giveaways slated for the second stop on the Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series five-event tour. The LSX Shootout is run as part of the Quick Fuel Technology NMCA Blue Grass Nationals and the event is presented by Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center.

 

The event includes six Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series categories including the Real Street Shootout and the Street Car Challenge. LSX blocks will be given to the class winners in Real Street, Street Rumble, Street King, and CP Stock.

 

The NMCA Bluegrass Nationals goes down the same weekend of May 17-20 with 4,500-hp VP Racing Fuels Xtreme Pro Mod door-slammers, Mickey Thompson Radial Wars, Nostalgia Super Stock and its Dave Duell Classic shootout, as well as an all-American car show and manufacturer’s midway. Combined, the event offers over $125,000 in purse, prizes, and giveaways.  [04/11/18]

Two DRO staffers are on the disabled list after having recently had medical problems.

“Chicago Jon” Hoffman underwent back surgery.

Photographer Brad Baker, son of columnist Jim Baker, is at home after having a pacemaker installed.

‘Roll Drag’ sanctioning body begins April 28 at PBIR

The International Roll Racing Association will hold its inaugural event on Saturday, April 28, at Palm Beach International Raceway in West Palm Beach, FL.

 

Instead of starting from a complete stop, a roll drag heads-up race starts with both cars rolling at an agreed upon speed. The IRAA is owned by IRG, which also owns the IHRA and several race tracks.

 

There are four events planned for this year with a champion to be crowned at the end of the season. All races will be held at PBIR: April 28, Aug. 25, Oct. 13 and Dec. 8.  [04/11/18]

VP Racing Fuels, Inc., has signed a multi-year sponsor agreement with the Real Pro Mod association.

Meyer Distributing has signed a partnership agreement with JB Strassweg through the 2019 season. Strassweg is the NHRA North Central Division Top Dragster champion.
