Shawn Langdon picked up his first Funny Car win at the 10th annual NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals to become only the second driver in history to win in both the Top Fuel and Funny Car categories at zMAX Dragway. Langdon clinched his first Funny Car victory when he powered his Global Electronics Technology Toyota Camry Funny Car to a run of 4.125-seconds at 305.08 mph. He faced a final quadrant of Robert Hight, John Force and Matt Hagan. Hight finished as the runner up in the category with a 4.159/242.89 run. Langdon also secured his first Top Fuel victory at zMAX Dragway in 2012.
The Capco boys celebrate as reigning world champion Steve Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors Top Fuel dragster to the winner’s circle for the first time this season with his pass of 3.778 at 323.19 taking out Leah Pritchett, Clay Millican and Terry McMillen. Millican came in second with a run of 4.035 at 310.48 mph.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Andrew Hines (far lane) won with his run of 6.831 at 198.17 on his Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Street Rod to pick up his 50th career victory. He is the first PSM rider in NHRA history to make it to this milestone. He faced teammate Eddie Krawiec, Hector Arana Jr. and Ryan Oehler in the final round. Krawiec was the runner up at 6.858 seconds and 197.68 mph.
On Friday Mike Salinas posted a track-record 3.687-second pass at 327.43 mph to claim No. 1 qualifier honors that held up through Saturday qualifying. As a reward for helping Salinas to his first career NHRA Top Fuel victory earlier this month in Las Vegas, Salinas rewarded each member of his crew with new Harleys before the start of Sunday eliminations. Salinas went out in the second quad.
Erica Enders broke the Pro Mod speed record she set two weeks ago in Houston with a pass of 260.41 mph. She made it to the Pro Mod final quad.
We’ll have more photos and results coming tomorrow in DRO. [04/29/19]
Nancy Matter got her first Funny Car Chaos win over the weekend at Mo-Kan Raceway. Coming from the No. 8 qualifying spot, she got past Allen Middendorf, who had won at the Denton, TX, FCC event and then got the best of Nick Poloson to defeat Ken Singleton in the A-field final.
In the B-field, Matt Nissen was the winner over Nick Johnson. Twenty-three teams were at the event making two eight-car fields.
Next event for the Funny Car chaos is May 31-June 1 at Amarillo, TX. Look for the Burkster to attend. [04/29/19]
Larry Dixon with his “NitroX2” at the 2017 SEMA Show.
Former drag racing champion Larry Dixon has filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the National Hot Rod Association saying the organization wrongfully suspended and blacklisted him in 2017 after he brought out a two-seat top fuel dragster to give fans a chance to ride along.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reports that Dixon’s suit filed April 11 in Indianapolis alleges his two-seater dragster was blacklisted from more than 140 NHRA-sanctioned tracks. The IBJ quotes the complaint as saying Dixon “has now been entirely deprived of his livelihood and sole source of income by this unjustifiable suspension—which is, in effect, a lifetime ban from NHRA—unless he relinquishes an investment of hundreds of thousands of dollars, we well as the future profits that he could derive from that investment.”
