Jim Rod Capp drove his Super Gas ’10 Corvette to the win in the NHRA Moser Sportsman Shootout this weekend during the South Central Division double-header event at Texas Motorplex.

 

A Houston-based driver, Capp qualified for the Moser Sportsman Shootout in Super Gas out of the year-long points battle during the 2018 NHRA racing season, and faced off with 15 other drivers from seven different NHRA classes in the eighth-mile race-within-a-race competition.

Toyota will be the primary sponsor of Doug Kalitta’s Top Fuel dragster at the upcoming Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals presented by Pennzoil at Houston Raceway Park.  [04/10/19]

Matt Sackman, cylinder head specialist on the Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster and a Don Schumacher Racing developmental driver, successfully earned his NHRA Top Fuel license on Monday, April 8, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

 

Sackman, who has been part of the DSR family since 2013, first working as an intern on Antron Brown’s Top Fuel dragster before transitioning into a full-time position in 2014, licensed in the very machine he services daily while traveling the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series circuit.

 

Sackman started driving his family’s Top Dragster in 2015 and in 2017 moved into the seat of a Top Alcohol Dragster sponsored by Hangsterfer’s Metalworking Lubricants.

 

“These young up-and-coming drivers are the future of our sport,” said DSR team owner Don Schumacher. “It’s exciting to see one of our own making big strides towards his goal of one day competing at the highest level of NHRA Drag Racing.” [04/10/19]

To say that this season hasn’t gone the way Steve Torrence expected would be an understatement. After dominating the NHRA Top Fuel class last season and claiming the championship, he has not won an event so far this year.

 

The Texas native is hoping for better luck in his home state at this week’s SpringNationals at Houston Raceway Park.

 

“We love racing in Texas,” Torrence said. “The only thing we love more is winning in Texas.”

 

His father, Billy, will also race at Houston in the second Capco Contractors dragster. He won the class at Phoenix and currently is tied for sixth with Clay Millican in the Mello Yello points. Steve has had two runner-up finishes this season and sits third in the points. [04/10/19]

Cruz Pedregon and team are heading to the Lone Star State and bringing with them the momentum of five very consistent runs and some personal successes aced in Las Vegas last weekend.
