HARLEYS SCREAM AT GATORS
For the first time in NHRA history, a factory-backed
Harley-Davidson qualified for eliminations.
Andrew Hines, brother of three-time champion
Matt Hines, rode his Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson
to the No. 10 spot in the field with a 7.275
pass at 179.89. The Harley team made their debut
at the 2002 Gatornationals with GT Tonglet as
the rider. The team failed to qualify in seven
attempts, and added a second bike during the
off season. Tonglet failed to make the field,
missing the No. 16 spot by two-one-thousandths
of a second.

The Super Gas final for the Gatornationals
was a classic matchup between Bryan Robinson's
'Vette and Steve Matusek's Mustang. It was Ford
vs Chevy, Rat Motor vs Ford Hemi, and the winner
was...Robinson who won in a double breakout
affair with a 9.867/164.11 to Matusek's quicker
but losing 9.853/166.05. We're running a picture
of Matusek because the editor is a Ford fan,
and driver Steve Matusek owns Aeromotive fuel
systems, a DRO advertiser. Next week, just to
balance the scales we'll run a photo of Bryan
Robinson. (photo by AutoImagery)
ALKY FUNNIES ON THEIR WAY
OUT?
DRO overheard a tech guy telling a funny car
crew that if they wanted to race a blown alky
Hemi motor next season they had better start
looking around for a Pro Modified race car to
put it in. He was probably just yanking their
chain a little, but this is how rumors get started.

Tony
Bartone would love to go Top Fuel racing but until
he gets sponsorship he going to continue to terrorize
the A/FD ranks with the help of Steve Boggs. The
team recently ran a 277-mph lap and won at Gainesville
over Bill Reichert with a 5.351/268 lap. Word
around the pits is that left coaster Jerry Darien
and Easterner Bartone are going to follow each
other around this season in a Battle Royal between
the two quickest and fastest A/FDs on the planet.
