Renovation work cancels May 12 race at National Trail; May 13 in on

A major renovation project reaches near completion at National Trail Raceway as repaving of the race track, staging lanes and other areas have been completed, but the Friday, May 12 event has been postponed.

“It was our goal to have all operations fully functional by this weekend, said Scott Gardner, Chief Operating Officer. However, we ran into some deep substrate issues at the very end of the shutdown area which has slowed our progress down a bit,” he continued.

This gives the NHRA track prep specialists, who were brought in to assist the National Trail team, additional time to get the race surface in shape for the Spring Spectacle of Speed event planned for this Saturday, May 13. The Spectacle of Speed will be conducted as an eighth-mile drag race due to additional work needing to be completed at the far end shutdown area.

National Trail Raceway in Ohio was purchased in March by a new ownership group that also bought Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas.

Empire Dragway will try to dry out this weekend

New York’s Empire Dragway will be closed this weekend due to standing water in the pits and more rain forecast.

The Gasser Racing Series event scheduled for May 13 has been canceled. Next Gasser event at Empire will be May 27.

Irwindale reschedules Summit drags due to rain

Who thought the West Coast would get rained out as much of the Midwest and East Coast did last week, but the NHRA Summit Racing Series event at Irwindale Dragway that was scheduled for Sunday, May 14, (which was rescheduled from May 7), has now been moved to Saturday, June 24, ahead of the regularly scheduled Sunday, June 25, event.

And for you roundy-round fans, the twin Late Model races that were rained out on May 6 will be added to the Saturday, July 1, program with a second Late Model race added for Saturday, Sept. 2.

Whew.

Auction of Muldowney Super Comp dragster moved to September

The auctioning of drag racing legend Shirley Muldowney's one-of-a-kind Super Comp dragster modeled after her iconic "Last Pass" Top Fuel dragster -- the proceeds of which will benefit her namesake charity, Shirley's Kids -- has been postponed due to the recent death of Muldowney's son, John Muldowney.

The Danny Nelson-built Racecraft Chassis, powered by a 582-cubic-inch Chevrolet Head Hunter motor from Sunset Performance, will now be sold at Dana Mecum's Auction to be held Sept. 6-9 at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas.

"Shirley has been devastated by the passing of her only child, John, and she needs adequate time to grieve so we have moved the auction to September," Shirley's Kids Chairman Stan Holt said. "Our thanks to the professionals at Mecum Auction, who have been so supportive and helpful. They completely understood the situation and graciously moved our time slot to the Dallas auction.

"We're sorry to disappoint the many people that have expressed an interest in the racecar and were planning to bid on it next week in Indy to support Shirley's Kids, but we hope they all understand our predicament."

Collector Car Appreciation Day will be July 14 this year

The Collector Car Appreciation Day will be celebrated this year on July 14. At the request of SEMA, this holiday has been marked each year since 2010 by a U.S. Senate Resolution recognizing that the “collection and restoration of historic and classic cars is an important part of preserving the technological achievements and cultural heritage of the United States.”

We should note that the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act still needs to be passed by Congress. Without this protection, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contends it would be illegal to convert a motor vehicle into a dedicated race vehicle if the emissions system is no longer in its original configuration.

This means that old cars could not be converted and the market for aftermarket products would cease. Let your lawmakers know you want this RPM law to pass at www.sema.org/rpm.
