‘The Spirit of Lions Drag Strip’ dream begins

Over the weekend, the first event at the Price Automobilia Collection held a Spirit of Lions Drag Strip open house. Plans are to recreate the original starting line in a museum dedicated to the legendary SoCal strip that existed from 1955 to 1972 and was run by Mickey Thompson and later by CJ Hart.

 

Outside, this event was filled with over twenty cackle cars and indoors provided a glimpse of the huge facility celebrating our car culture. In addition to a fully working diner, there’s a large room filled with an amazing collection of Willys Americars including one of the powder blue Stone Woods & Cook supercharged gassers. Next to that room is a collection of luxury cars, and the facility houses a vast restoration shop with numerous works in progress.

An awesome recreation of Jack Chrisman’s Sachs & Sons ’64 Comet built by Kansans Mark and Doug Wagner was debuted at the open house with a nitro-fed supercharged Ford and direct-drive trans built with reference photographs and film from the period of the original build in Chrisman’s Long Beach garage. Legends like Ed Iskenderian, Lions starter Larry Sutton, Ed “the Ace” McCulloch, Steve Plueger, Walt Stevens and Tom McEwen, among others, were there for the celebration. The Lions Drag Strip build continues with work from artist Kenny Youngblood and a Grand Opening planned for later this year.  [06/28/17]

‘Heads-Up Hootenanny’ this week at Gateway

After inclement weather forced its postponement in April, the Premier Street Car Association returns to Gateway Motorsports Park (www.gatewaymsp.com) June 30-July 1 for the second running of Heads-Up Hootenanny.

 

This event under the lights features the cars and stars of the small-tire radial world and the Midwest Pro Mod Association. Drivers will also be competing in the JEGS Super Quick Series. [06/28/17]

SHRA dodges rain at Little River Dragway

The Southwest Heritage Racing Association’s Little River Nostalgia Drags were in question as rain threatened the event on DATe, but the track was dry and had bit come race time.

 

​Tommy Drozd used a .0008 light and ran 4.677 to take the NE1 win over Tera Graves. That moves Drozd into second place in the points standings, just one point behind Andy Mears, with Graves now in third place.​Jeff Cameron took the NE2 win over a red-lighting Garry Wheeler. Wheeler maintains the NE2 points, however.​A red light also determined the NE3 winner with Doug Morrison getting the gift from Dustin Bradford. The two came into Temple tied, but Morrison left leading the points race.  (Chris Graves/MaxCackle Photos)Nostalgia Super Stock was won by David Ardoin over Kent Morris, both of whom were running in their first SHRA final. Ronnie Smith, who lost in the first round, still leads the points in this class.

 

Old School No-Electronics was won by Larry Young in a 1982 S10 pickup over Mario Quinteros and his ’55 Chevy. Clyde Haynie got the Old School Electronics win over Michael Graves.

 

The Nostalgia Super Stockers will run Saturday, July 1, at Northstar Dragway along with a Pro Mod vs. Fuel Altered Showdown.

 

The SHRA makes it first stop ever at Paris Drag Strip on Saturday, July 8, with all classes taking part. [06/28/17]
