End of gasoline-powered cars inches closer?

Look, no battery in this Volvo. In off-track automotive news, the Agent notes a couple of international plans to phase out cars that have only an internal combustion engine (ICE).

Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars. It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm.

These five cars will be supplemented by a range of gasoline and diesel plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid 48 volt options on all models, representing one of the broadest electrified car offerings of any car maker. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date.

France announced its plans to end the sale of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles by 2040 in a bid to become a carbon-neutral nation, Energy Minister Nicolas Hulot said, effectively promoting electric cars.

Presenting the country's Climate Plan in Paris on Thursday, July 6, Hulot said France will offer tax incentives to replace diesel autos that are more than 20 years old and gasoline vehicles made before 2001.

The U.S. may not follow suit anytime soon, but, as Leonardo DiCaprio (as Howard Hughes) famously said in “The Aviator” – it’s the wave of the future. And remember, there is already a National Electric Drag Racing Association

Dodge announces dealer allocation plan for Challenger SRT Demon

The limited-production, 840-horsepower Dodge Challenger SRT Demon – the fastest quarter-mile production car ever – is due to start arriving in dealerships this fall. Dodge has announced just how it will allocate these rare beasts to its dealer body.

“We learned a lot when we launched the wildly popular SRT Hellcats,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands, Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT—FCA North America. “We’ve taken that information and created an allocation plan that is clear and concise, builds on Demon’s position as the Dodge//SRT halo and makes it easy for our customers to understand how they can put a Demon into their garage and, ultimately, out on the drag strip.”

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the first-ever production car to do a front-wheel lift, as certified by Guinness World Records, and it’s the world’s fastest quarter-mile production car with an elapsed time (ET) of 9.65 seconds at 140 miles per hour (mph), as certified by National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). It also registers the highest g-force (1.8 g) ever recorded at launch in a production car.

“The 2018 Dodge Challenger Demon represents the best of what Dodge//SRT stands for – performance capabilities that are second to none, iconic styling and a heritage built on pushing the boundaries of what is possible at a price that is attainable,” Kuniskis added. “We know some dealers may be tempted to sell to the highest bidder, but we are encouraging them to leverage the Demon as a halo for both the brand and their dealership, to bring customers into their showrooms and see everything we have to offer.”

Dodge is also creating a new Demon Concierge hotline (800-998-1110) to provide direct communication for customers and dealers. A new website will also allow them to track their orders at www.dodge.com

World Footbrake Challenge shortened by rain on Thursday

The 11th version of the BTE World Footbrake Challenge presented by Yukon Gear & Axle event began at Bristol Dragway under cloudy skies, but nonetheless with a large field of race cars from all over the east coast.

Scheduled for Thursday was a Test-N-Tune session followed by the first of two World Footbrake Gambler’s Races with each paying $3,000 to the winner along with round money. Mother Nature tried to “wet down” the party atmosphere in the early afternoon, but after a short delay, time trials continued followed by the first round of eliminations for the Gambler’s Race.

As is custom at the WFC, at eight or less cars, each of the competitors are placed on a ladder based off their previous round reaction time. In round 5, there remained nine cars so the ladder had to wait one more round. Round 6 found the Mattera family, brothers Tony and Bobby, Jamie Holston, Adam Davis (shown) and Robert Hamrick as the remaining group of racers for the money.

Unfortunately, the wet stuff returned with a vengeance ruining the party for Thursday night. The remaining five battle it out on Friday morning during the time trial session to crown a $3,000 winner. Racing continues through Sunday.

Dack makes changes to car before ‘Nitro Up North’

Australian racer Marty Dack has made a bundle of changes to his Ford Mustang Pro Slammer ahead of his appearance at Nitro Up North on July 21 and 22.

The West Australian driver will need every advantage he can get at Hidden Valley Drag Strip, with the news that 16 cars have already entered for the Pro Slammer division.

Dack faces something of an unpredictable response from his 3500 horsepower machine, with the supercharged V8 now paired with an automatic transmission, new cylinder heads and updated suspension. Dack will be carrying new support from GPS tracker provider MacTrack at Nitro Up North.

With the pace of the Pro Slammer field now seeing regular 5.6- and 5.7-second passes, Dack believes a team needs to be running at least 5.8-second runs to figure in the results.

“Having taken a year off racing due to business commitments, the team is back hard at work preparing the car with some new goodies,” Dack said. “We aren’t here to fill the gaps; every racer wants to win and we don’t want to do anything half-hearted.”

Dack will be taking on the stars of Pro Slammer including ten-time Australian champion John Zappia, 400 Thunder Professional Drag Racing Series reigning champion Mark Belleri, former champion Ben Bray, and Darwin’s own Scott MacLean who has been running strongly in recent times.

Surprises at NitroNationals in Finland

The weekend saw the 2017 edition of the FHRA NitroNationals at the Alastaro facility in south east Finland. With some curious happenings during the qualification sessions, race day was a comparatively smooth-running affair with a number of surprises in the FIA classes.

Swede Åke Persson delivered the goods in FIA Pro Modified, benefiting from a consistent six zero approach from the tune-up overseen by Jonnie Lindberg to take his first winner's trophy back across the Baltic.

Incoming points leader, fresh off the back of his first win in Swede a couple of weeks previously, Duncan Micallef stretched his lead in FIA Top Fuel and earning the traditional Finnish dunking after defeating Stig Neergaard in a Malta v Denmark final.

Holden GTS breaks Australian record with Dodge Demon tech

The Agent just had to share this look at an Australian VF GTS (like a Chevrolet SS with an LSA instead of an LS3) making a record run thanks to the same technology that is currently used on the Dodge Demon. A tip of the Agent’s fedora to LSX Magazine for the terrific story.
