Former AA/FC standout Kris Krabill was at the wheel of a Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals. In the first round Krabill, who qualified at No. 15, cut a 0.26 to 0.32 light against Mia Tedesco, but his 5.562/243.68 could not beat her 5.328/273.55. [07/10/17]
Jon Reich has told Series Administrator, Jeff Burk, that he will bring his “Blitz Krieg” AA Funny Car to this weekend’s DRO AA/FC Challenge at Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Reich's '75 Monza' is an authentic nostalgia AA/FC and according to Reich was built without any billet parts. He says both the block and heads have water jackets, which make it truly old school.
It will be the first time with the series for the racer from Minnesota. [07/10/17]
If you are coming to the CFMP Night of Fire be sure to look up Randy MacIlrath at the rear of the staging lanes and get signed up so that .001 reaction time puts you in the Strange/DRO Reaction Time Challenge “Elite 8”. [07/10/17]
With music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s playing in the background, drivers will shine, show and go in their 1972 and earlier street rods as part of the 16th Annual Blue Suede Cruise sponsored by AkzoNobel, Friday through Sunday, July 14-16, at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
The event with a Sweet 16 theme in honor of its sixteenth year in existence, Nostalgia Drag Racing League's Pro 7.00, Pro 7.50, Pro Comp and Pro Gas categories, as well as Hot Rod Eliminator and a Gasser Magazine Gasser Appreciation Race, will be in the spotlight.
A Smoky Burnout Contest will bring even more heat at 7:20 p.m. Saturday, July 15, and it will be followed by a concert by the Van-Dells and a flame-throwing contest featuring judging for Injection and Non-Injection categories, and $250 awaits the winner in each of those two categories. There also will be a manufacturers’ midway, a parade of neon lights and a colorful display of fireworks over the track. [07/10/17]
It was a great day for Chicago-area racers at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals.
T.J.’s father, Tony Zizzo (at right), is well known in Chicago-area racing.
It wasn’t quite the Clay Millican feel-good story from Bristol, but it was pretty close as part-time racer T.J. Zizzo took his independent “Rust-Oleum” dragster to the Top Fuel semifinals at Joliet. It was the Lincolnshire, IL, racer’s first event of the 2017 season; in fact, it was his first race in 10 months.
"We have purchased the right parts to do this well. There was a time when we couldn't afford those correct parts. So, my dad and I made the investment on the correct parts," T.J. explained.
T.J. got past Pat Dakin and Brittany Force, before falling to eventual winner, Steve Torrence.
It’s not many grandfathers and granddaughters that are drag racing at the same time, but Chris Karamesines and Krista Baldwin were at Joliet. Karamesines did not make the Top Fuel field. Krista “Greek-ette” qualified at No. 11 in TAD, but lost in the first round to Chris Demke.
One of the Greek’s most famous dragsters was on display.
And, of course, a Chicago event wouldn’t be complete without the famous “Chi-Town Hustler.” [07/10/17]
